?It?s just been one of those days?I can?t seem to get anything done! I?ve got way too many things on my ?To-Do List?. Oh the list started out innocently enough as a single handwritten column on one sheet of lined paper; but now it?s grown to a three-column table in a spreadsheet software program! I get no satisfaction from checking off each item as I finish it. For each task I complete, at least two more are added. I began my work day at 6:30 AM with grandiose plans of completing a special project before Noon. Now it?s 16 hours later (10:30 PM) and I still have not finished the project. My anxiety and frustration are mounting. Tomorrow?s list has already been written and it does not include the things left undone from today?s list! I don?t know if I?m going to make it through the week with all of the demands upon my time and energy. I need help?quickly!
A Juggling Act
I wrote the above entry in my journal several days ago. What a day that was! How about you?been there lately?
Life can be such a juggling act. Like professional jugglers, we try to keep 5 or 6 balls moving through the air at the same time. But unlike professional jugglers, we rarely succeed.
Everyone is so busy these days. Work is performed at a frantic pace and people are in such a hurry. There is an air of impatience and intolerance?a lot of frenetic darting to and fro that is almost out of control. It?s very difficult to keep your priorities in line when life is so fast paced. But the negative consequences of so much activity?stress, damaged or broken relationships, poor health?can wreak more havoc than what we think we will gain.
The Urgent
I tried for years to use a paper-based time management system with columns similar to this: ?Must Do?Need to Do?Like to Do?. I?m sure you?ve used something like this (maybe even now). The problem I encountered was that I never seemed to get around to doing much in the ?Like to Do? column, which was very discouraging. The ?Must Do and Need to Do? items consumed all of my time.
So I switched to a simpler paper-based system with the following columns, ?Urgent? and ?Important?. Now, I was sure to spend my time wisely. Unfortunately, I found out that the urgent things monopolized my time and pushed the important things to
the back-burner.
Here are three examples of ?The Urgent?:
The Important
?The Urgent? often masquerades as ?The Important?. However, not everything we do is important. To identify what?s important to you requires that you answer three questions:
The Bottom Line
Identifying ?The Important? requires focus?a concentration of energy, effort, and thought. ?The Important? is where you should spend most of your time. Now, before you send me screaming emails, I don?t mean that you shouldn?t address ?The Urgent?. Instead, consider the following:
Focus on ?The Important?!
Priority is the key to managing ?The Urgent? and focusing on ?The Important?. Before you leap to complete a task, take a few moments to think about its true priority. Does it need to be done right at this moment, or is there something else on your list that should come first?
While others may demand that everything on your To-Do List must be done immediately, you and only you can really determine what should be done first, second, third, etc. (It?s not possible to do everything at once; priority must be given to each item).
Today, I?ve taken a dose of my own medicine and committed to focusing on ?The Important?. So far, I?ve accomplished at least one thing that will have a significant and positive impact on others?finishing this article.

Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona patented an innovative system to specify in a simple, cost-effective and reliable manner the infertility of a person through the study of oxidative stress on sperm, a parameter rarely studied until now. The method was developed by professor Jordi Benet and doctoral researcher Agust Garcia Peir from the UAB Unit in Cellular Biology and Medical Genetics. The CIMAB (Centre d'Infertilitat Masculina i Anlisis de Barcelona) was founded to commercialise the method.
Male infertility requires exhaustive analyses of the sperm to determine the origins of the problem and be able to offer the most effective treatment. The main parameters studied currently include concentration levels, mobility and morphology of sperm. Recently however scientists began to consider using a new parameter, sperm DNA fragmentation.
Oxidative stress in sperm is the main cause of DNA fragmentation and that is why determining this parameter may justify the presence of fragmentation and thus discard other factors. This will aid doctors in administering anti-oxidant treatments to those who really need it.
"The difference with other existing methods lies in the fact that our system is simple, quick and cost-effective, and it can be easily added to any laboratory", explains Agust Garcia Peir. The main innovation consists in a new formulation in the analysis which permits studying spermatozoa in a very precise manner, thus minimising any false positive results when testing for oxidative stress.
In order to offer diagnoses using this new method, a new spin-off was created. CIMAB (Centre d'Infertilitat Masculina i Anlisis de Barcelona) will focus its activities in determining the fertility potential of male individuals with different sperm analyses methods. It will offer its services to specialists in infertility such as gynaecologists, urologists, andrologists, fertility clinics and sperm banks. Leading this innovative initiative is Agust Garcia Peir.
Currently 15% of all reproductive age couples suffer from infertility and in 50% of the cases the male factor is responsible.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? The U.S. State Department is proposing what it calls "significant and controversial" changes to a foreign exchange program that has been exploited by unscrupulous labor brokers and organized criminals in the sex industry, said an internal memo obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.
The Jan. 18 memo comes more than a year after an AP investigation uncovered widespread abuses in the J-1 Summer Work Travel program, which annually allows more than 100,000 foreign college students to work in the U.S. for up to four months. It came from Adam Ereli, assistant secretary for the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and was addressed to Assistant Secretary of State Ann Stock.
"The reforms we are undertaking will significantly reduce the opportunities for wrongdoing and catch it much more quickly when it does occur," the memo said.
Some of the most significant changes would be to ban jobs in factories, warehouses and other places like seafood packing plants. The agency also plans on "re-emphasizing the adult entertainment industry prohibition by specifically prohibiting jobs with escort services, adult book/video stores, massage parlors, and strip clubs."
It would require sponsors to "use particular prudence and caution when dealing with jobs that offer legitimate employment but also have been known to be associated with human trafficking, such as janitorial service, housekeeping and modeling agencies."
There's also a provision aimed at protecting American workers, "such as a more precise definition of temporary seasonal employment and a bar against SWT job placements during layoffs or lockouts."
The memo said the rules would be made public around March.
The companies the State Department designated as official sponsors ? which charge up to several thousand dollars to arrange visas and jobs for the participants ? objected to less significant changes made last year and to the anticipated new restrictions.
"They have told us they are taking these complaints to Congress, though we have yet to see any indication of congressional support for their position," the memo said. "Notwithstanding these potential criticisms, we think a solid case can be made that these changes are needed and that some are needed urgently."
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton last year ordered a thorough review of the program, and her department had already made several changes since the AP investigation uncovered living and working conditions that some participants compared to indentured servitude. In November it had temporarily stopped accepting any new sponsors and will limit the number of future participants to this year's level, or about 109,000 students. The State Department also revised its rules to require more oversight by its 53 designated sponsors.
But not all of last year's changes have been fully implemented, according to the memo because some students will be "grandfathered" in.
"While this will mean that some participants are treated differently than others for a brief at time, to do otherwise, however, would create major problems for our embassies and consulates as placements are cancelled ? and possibly visas revoked ? for students who paid their fees and made their summer plans in good faith...," the memo said.
In one of the worst cases of abuse, a woman told the AP she was beaten, raped and forced to work as a stripper in Detroit after being promised a job as a waitress in Virginia.
In August 2011, dozens of workers protested conditions at a candy factory that contracts to pack Hershey chocolates in Hershey, Pa., complaining of hard physical labor and pay deductions for rent that often left them with little money. Then in December, a federal indictment accused the mafia of using the cultural exchange program to bring Eastern European women to work in New York strip clubs.
The program was created in 1963 to allow college students from other countries to spend their summer breaks living, working and traveling in the U.S. all in the name of fostering cultural understanding and showcasing what is great about America.
Most of the abuses over the years have been blamed on unregulated, third-party labor brokers who work with the students. Critics say the students have gotten little help from sponsor companies.
Danielle Grijalalva, executive director of the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students, says she was outraged that the State Department has known about serious problems, but has done little to address the problem.
"This is a memo about problems we've been telling them for years,"Grijalalva said. "They should never have been working in warehouse and factories. They told us they were going to make changes. But they didn't. This is just wrong."
And she was appalled that some groups may be grandfathered in.
"The State Department keeps promoting the program. What they should do is fix it so no more children will be hurt," she said.
Under the J-1 program, foreign students often land jobs at hotels, resorts and restaurants. But they have also worked in places like fish factories and strip clubs. Many of the students end up in resort towns, and in places in the Florida Panhandle the abuse has been so bad that it helped inspire state legislation being considered this year.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar, said he has pushed for stronger state laws after hearing horror stories about the exploitation of J-1 students.
"It's an abject failure on the part of the federal government to the point of recklessness," Gaetz said.
Participation has boomed from about 20,000 students in 1996 to a peak of more than 150,000 in 2008, and roughly 1 million foreign students have taken part in the past decade. The students come from around the world, with some of the top participating countries being Russia, Brazil, Ukraine, Thailand, Ireland, Bulgaria, Peru, Moldova and Poland.

Domo, the SaaS business intelligence startup launched by Omniture founder Josh James, has raised $20 million in new funding from Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). This round brings total investment in Domo to $63 million. Previous investors include Benchmark Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Ron Conway and David Lee of SV Angel, and Hummer Winblad. The Humble Indie Bundle is a promotion that started in May 2010 and has reappeared several times since then. It's a collection of games from indie developers, that's sold as a download with no DRM (meaning you can copy it as much as you want). What sets it apart is that you can name your own price, or even donate the money to charity instead. And all of the games are cross-platform, meaning they work on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Well, the Bundle is back, and this time it's added a new platform: Android.
Yes, that means mobile
Google's open-source Android operating system is the one with the friendly robot mascot, which powers nearly all smartphones and tablets that aren't BlackBerries or iPhones/iPads. If your phone or tablet gets its apps from the Android Market, it's running Android (unless you modded your BlackBerry PlayBook to use it).
The Humble Indie Bundle apps aren't being sold on the Android Market. You buy them on the Bundle website, humblebundle.com, and then download and install them manually. It isn't hard, but you need to first open the menu on your home screen, tap on "Settings," tap on "Applications," then tap the "Unknown Sources" checkbox to allow it. This is what lets you install from outside the Android Market.
What about updates?
If you buy an app through the Android Market, you get free updates and can download them at any time. Updates are trickier for apps that you install from outside it, but according to Brandon Lancaster of Android Police, that shouldn't be a problem for the Humble Indie Bundle games. Two of the games will prompt you when there's a new update available, and "hopefully" the other two will follow suit. Meanwhile, the Humble Bundle people are "working on an Android app" that should help you keep track of your games.
Which games are included?
The four games that are part of this bundle are on all three computer platforms, as well as Android.
You can name your own price for the first three, which are Anomaly: Warzone Earth (a sort of reverse tower defense game), Osmos (a game where you play as a single cell which absorbs others), and Edge (a puzzle platformer where you roll a cube through a maze).
If you try to donate less than $1, it will show you a picture of an impoverished programmer, note that you have no heart, and not grant you the keys to unlock the games on Steam (which is an option for people who use that service). It will still let you download the games, though; you just won't be able to put them on your Steam account.
If you donate more than the average price -- currently $5.30 -- you get World of Goo as well, a physics-based puzzle game that requires you to build bridges and scaffolds.
All games include soundtracks, and can be installed as many times as you like. Demos of the Android games can be found here.
How long does it last?
The bundle offer ends at 6 p.m. EST Feb. 14.
