Chinese citizens are honoring their dearly departed loved ones throughout much of August during the month-long "Hungry Ghost" festival, the BBC is reporting.
Featuring 10-course feasts, musical performances and other spectacular rituals, the elaborate festival is considered a tribute to spirits thought to be roaming the earth. The belief is: the happier the spirits are, the more they'll do to ensure harmony and financial success among the living.
Given the money at stake, any consider the festival also a leading indicator of the local economy.
