Guam News - Guam News
Guam - Governor Eddie Calvo held a press conference detailing his recent trade mission to Japan. While they did leave with the impression that the marine relocation from Japan will happen, the focus of the trade mission was to spark economic development here on Guam.
?"Economic development of course means more capital coming into this island it means increased revenues coming to the Government of Guam so that we can properly fund those critical core services that this government provides and improve the quality of life for our people and it also means most importantly jobs,? said Governor Calvo.
?Jobs are critical on Guam now with it's 13 percent unemployment rate that is higher than the national average. It's an unemployment rate that the governor called unacceptable. This is why the governor is working hard to create a thriving economy, but aside from meeting with various investors and companies in Japan the governor and his staff also got to meet with Japanese government officials about the Guam military buildup.
?"They know it's happening, they know it's gonna happen obviously there are some issues both in the United States government side as well as the Japan government side but they also express a lot of confidence that this would move forward and certainly a lot of confidence in Guam,? said the Govenor's Chief of Staff Frank Arriola.
?The trade mission also focused on projects outside of the scope of the military buildup. The governor's special assistant for economic affairs Henry Taitano gave examples of some of the other opportunities for investment that the administration is trying to encourage. "Techonology, agriculture, research and development partnerships with UOG, partnerships with GPA and GWA, there are other opportunities alongside the buildup that they can invest in or reinvest in if there are already here,? said Taitano.
?The goal of the governor in all of this is to entice more investors to bring their money into to Guam to help create new industries that may spin off as a result of the buildup which would in turn lead to a stronger economy with more jobs. This japan trade mission was the first of many trade missions to come. The governor said the next trade mission will be to China.
