Health Canada has announced to health professionals and the public that there are some prescription drugs that could increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. It is an aggressive form of prostate cancer that grows and spreads faster than low-grade prostate cancer. It is a rare type of cancer.
The increased risk connected with prescription drugs dutasteride and finasteride is still considered small.
Because of the advisory, new warnings will be placed on the Canadian drug labels for dutasteride and finasteride products. Dutasteride is available on the market under the brand names Jalyn and Avodart. Finasteride is sold on the market under the brand names Propecia and Proscar.
Dutasteride and finasteride are used by men to treat hair loss. Proscar, Avodart, and Jalyn are used to treat the enlargement of the prostate, which is a non-cancerous condition in men over 40 years of age. Propecia is formulated to treat male pattern hair loss.
The Health Canada reviewed two large international clinical tests and came to the conclusion that long-term daily use of dutasteride and finasteride in men aged 50 years and above can increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. The 1 mg finasteride Propecia was not included in the trials but the potential risk was not ruled out.
