Stampeding elephants! Raging typhoons! Runaway trains! Hold onto your seats for the original amazing race.

Join fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg and his faithful servant as they race to beat the clock when the Seaside Repertory Theatre opens its summer season tonight with ?Around the World in 80 Days.?

The show is being produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Co. of Woodstock, Ill.

Phileas Fogg has agreed to an outrageous wager that puts his fortune and his life at risk. with his resourceful servant, Passepartout, Fogg sets out to circle the globe in an unheard-of 80 days.

But his every step is dogged by a detective who thinks he?s a robber on the run. Danger, romance and comic surprises abound in this whirlwind of a show as five actors portraying 39 characters traverse seven continents in mark Brown?s adaptation of one of the great adventure tales of all time by Jules Verne.

Starring Brook Stetler, Destin Bass, Scott Gibbs, Anne Marie Carroll and Meghan Bode, this production will keep your energy racing and your funny bone tickled. Scott Stackhouse directs the action.

Stetler, who portrays Fogg, also is opening his second season as artistic director with the Rep. Born and raised in Kansas, Stetler graduated with a BFA in theater arts from Nebraska Wesleyan University. He has since worked with The old Creamery, Know Theatre, New Stage Collective, and The Cincinnati Shakespeare Co.

Some of his favorite past projects include ?Fool for love,? ?Macbeth,? ?The Homecoming,? ?Rhinoceros,? ?The Santaland Diaries? and ?The Tempest.?

Bass, who plays several characters, recently graduated from the Centenary College of Louisiana with a theater degree concentration in performing arts. A few of his favorite roles include Willy Wonka, Ryan in ?High School Musical,? Banquo in ?Macbeth,? Snoopy in ?Charlie Brown? and Nathan Leopold Jr. in ?never the Sinner-Best Actor.?

Gibbs is in his first season at the Rep and plays Detective Fix. He recently graduated with a bachelor of theater arts degree from Centenary College of Louisiana. Gibbs was given the opportunity to work with the well-respected Texas Shakespeare Festival. Some of his past roles include: Midas from ?Metamorphoses,? Macbeth from ?Macbeth? and mr. Bungie from ?A New Brain.?

Local favorite, Carroll returns to the stage as Fogg?s servant, Passeparout. She grew up in Wichita, Kan., where she began acting and singing at a young age. after studying theater in Kansas City and Lincoln, Neb., she received her BFA in theater arts and performance.

Over the past few years she has worked professionally with The Know Theatre, Cincinnati Shakespeare Co. and in the Seaside Rep productions ?Beauty and the Beast,? ?Fuddy Meers,? ?The Homecoming,? ?Speed the Plow? and more. In addition to being an acting ensemble member, Carroll is director of the Rep?s Intern Program and serves as the Rep company manager.

Bode, who portrays Fogg?s love interest, Aouda, is originally from Albuquerque, N.M., she is a graduate of the University of New Mexico theater department. She is thrilled to be spending her summer here. Her favorite roles include Regan in ?King Lear,? Columbia in the ?Rocky Horror Show Live? and Violet in ?Les Bourgeoise Avant Garde.?

Around the World in 80 Days? plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through July 30. Tickets are $25. Discounts are available for members of the Rep, groups of six or more, and military with ID.

All performances take place in the Seaside Meeting Hall Theater 215 Quincy Circle.
