The offshore drilling life: cramped and dangerous (AP)

ALAMINOS CANYON BLOCK 857, GULF OF MEXICO ? The 160 workers on Shell's Perdido oil platform have access to a free restaurant, gym and movie theater.

Their laundry and meals are taken care of and they get paid pretty well ? about $60,000 a year for a young roughneck, $90,000 for a young engineer and $150,000 for a supervisor. Plus they get a two-week vacation every two weeks.

The catch? They toil on this floating oil factory in 12 hour shifts for 14 days straight. Their rooms are tiny ? just enough space for a pair of bunk beds, one desk and some lockers. And there is definitely no getting away from work: They are 200 miles from shore and there is nothing on the horizon in all directions.

The clanking, buzzing machine they live on rises 30 stories out of the water and weighs 50 million tons. It uses new and unproven technologies to coax oil out of a tricky and important geologic formation in the Gulf of Mexico. One well is in the deepest water ever, 9,627 feet.

If they can't get Perdido to work right and have to stop the oil and natural gas from flowing, their company loses $5 million per day in revenue. If they lose control of it, their lives are at stake.

The job drives some people crazy.

"A lot of people have trouble," says Louis Lemoine, a drilling foreman from Alexandria, La. who has been working offshore for 41 years. "You can't go anywhere."

But the ones who stick to it say they love it.

Alison Whitt, a 22-year-old engineer just out of college says: "At the end of 14 days here I'm ready to go home, but at the end of 14 days (off) I'm ready to come back."

Workers compare it to having a second family. The isolation, the intensity of working so many hours straight and the danger breed closeness uncommon in most jobs.

Most people don't eat three meals a day with their co-workers, or share small bunk rooms with them.

There are movie nights and video game tournaments. There's even a nurse who nags workers to get their cholesterol and blood pressure tested. There are also flare-ups between workers who are tired, and tired of being cooped up with each other for so long. "It's just like home," Lemoine says. "Spats. Rumors. Gossip."

The sense of camaraderie ? as well as the tension ? has been intensified for all Gulf oil workers since 11 died in the explosion of the oil rig controlled by BP in April of 2010. That disaster led to the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.

Chris Smith, Perdido's operations manager, says there's been a "chronic sense of unease" among workers ever since.

The Perdido workers, like many in the oil industry outside of BP, say their culture and processes were focused on safety long before BP's disaster. They say they would have avoided such an accident.

But they know that Shell workers have died in accidents, too, and they are reminded of the fact during a tedious, 90-minute safety session they must sit through when they arrive at Perdido. As if the dangers of deepwater drilling needed reinforcing, lifeboats hang from the platform and sharks can be seen prowling the waters beneath it.

Perdido gathers oil and natural gas from wells drilled in its vicinity, many by an on-board rig that drills down into the sea floor and then horizontally into oil reservoirs. The oil and gas is then sent via undersea pipeline to terminals and refineries on the Gulf coast.

The platform also has desalination machines to make fresh water, power generators, air conditioners, a giant kitchen, laundry facilities and TV hookups. If something breaks, engineers on board fix it. The cable guy isn't coming to Perdido to adjust anyone's picture.

Perdido workers come from Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and as far away as Michigan and Alaska to get to work. They board a helicopter at an airport in Galveston, Texas, for the two-hour ride to the platform.

When the helicopter touches down, it's all work for two weeks. The schedule compresses a full year's work into six months. But that makes for nice stretches of vacation.

Todd Coulon, a Shell veteran of 23 years from Barataria, La., a bayou town 30 miles south of New Orleans, says the two weeks off each month allow him to get chores and home projects done. That allows him to have "real weekends" during which he can spend time with his three kids, watch LSU and Saints football games and fish.

When it's time to work, the focus is clear: Keep the oil and gas flowing. The device on the platform that transfers the oil and gas to pipelines is called the "Lease Automated Custody Transfer Unit" but workers have a nickname for it: the cash register.

At each change in shift there is a meeting in the platform's common room. The foremen from the outgoing shift brief the foremen from the incoming shift on how the platform and the rig performed, the maintenance activities planned, the equipment and supplies that are arriving by boat, the latest weather forecast and any safety problems.

Foremen wear camouflage baseball caps, recline in office chairs and murmur in polite southern accents of different shades, from a deep Mississippi drawl to Southern Louisiana creole.

A recent meeting started with a safety report from a foreman who reported missing earplugs, cracked coatings, hoses in the wrong place that created a tripping hazard, a hand rail missing a pin and a helmet blown off the head of a worker and into the sea by a gust of wind.

Even heavier winds were coming, so the cranes had to be put in their "cradles" and drilling would likely have to be suspended. Maintenance work was slotted into the schedule.

Production rates from the day before were discussed, along with goals for the next day.

Some of the equipment Shell designed to separate oil and natural gas on the sea floor before pumping it up to the platform hasn't worked as well as hoped. Technicians have been adjusting equipment, changing procedures, and installing new equipment over several months to try to fix the problem. Finally, it seems to be working.

After more than a year of steady operation, Perdido has only recently hit its monthly production targets.

Perdido is producing the equivalent of 60,000 barrels of oil and natural gas a day from six wells. Eventually, the platform will produce 100,000 barrels per day from 35 wells drilled in a 30-mile radius around the platform.

At today's prices, that means revenue of more than $1.8 billion per year.

The challenge is to balance the pressure to keep the oil flowing with the pressure to keep workers safe.

Coulon ended a recent meeting by telling workers to be safe and look after each other. He didn't need to remind them that not too long ago 11 people doing the same kind of work never made it home for their two week break to see their families, fish and get stuff done around the house.

Yet Another Case of "Think Before You Tweet" ? NASCAR Driver Disgusts Breastfeeding Advocates With Twitter Rant

Photo: EraPhernalia Vintage/Creative Commons

Breasts. We see them everywhere, nowadays. Television, movies, magazines ? they're pretty much impossible to miss, even if you try really hard. NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne is probably a fan himself, but he managed to find at least one set to be offensive enough to turn 'em into a personal PR nightmare.

Kahne infuriated the nursing-friendly masses when he tweeted his uncensored opinion regarding a mother breastfeeding her son at a grocery store. Apparently, "One boob put away one boob hanging" was so offensive to him that he felt it warranted international publicity. After referencing the incident as "nasty," he claimed that he no longer felt like shopping or eating after witnessing the public display of nudity. The Twitter debacle escalated when one of Kahne's followers begged to differ with his opinion (using some mild profanity), to which he responded with more profanity. As you can imagine, nursing advocates and people in general are angry about his attitude and the way he handled himself on Twitter.

So, here's what I don't understand about this situation (aside from the disgustingly rude commentary): guys are supposed to like boobs, right? It seems to me that spotting one out in public would count as a freebie, of sorts. I'm not saying that this woman couldn't have benefited from the use of a nice nursing cover, but I find it hard to believe that it's any more offensive to witness a mother breastfeeding her child than it is to see the backsides of people who can't be bothered to wear belts or pants that fit (I saw at least four today in public places).

It remains to be seen how Kahne's reputation will be affected by this rant, if at all. There are certainly plenty of people who agree with his point of view, even if it was expressed in a tactless manner. He has already issued a formal apology, of course, which was clearly written by a seasoned publicist if the correct use of grammar and punctuation are indicators.

So how do you feel about public breastfeeding? Do you think that Kahne's comments were justified, or did you find his views to be majorly offensive?

Debrah Kelly-Pospisil commented on Debrah Kelly-Pospisil's group 'Rick Santorum for President'

Ann Coulter (who is totally in the tank for Romney, btw) has a new column out saying Rick Santorum would be great if only he were not soft on illegal immigration. This is a false claim. Rick objected to E-Verify as it was written into legislation, because he said the system was flawed and could be better done by a private contractor, instead of government employees. So he is not against E-Verify, just E-Verify the way it was originally written. In all areas of illegal immigration, he is tough as nails. I guess Ann feels threatened that Rick is gaining on "her guy". Here is a link:

City Room: At Mayor's Interfaith Breakfast, Some Muslim No-Shows

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg?s annual interfaith breakfast is typically a feel-good event, a chance for the mayor and other city officials to mingle with representatives of many religions.

But the mood at this year?s event, held on Friday morning at the New York Public Library, was dampened slightly by a controversy involving accusations of police surveillance of Muslim communities and a long-running dispute over religious groups meeting in public schools.

In the days leading up to the breakfast, 14 Muslim leaders sent Mr. Bloomberg a letter saying that they were boycotting the breakfast over reports, mostly by the Associated Press, that described the use of undercover officers and informants to gather information about political activity among Muslims in the city. And the information, the reports said, was gathered in circumstances in which there was no indication that crimes had occurred.

Mr. Bloomberg and the police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, have denied the accusations. The mayor?s office also noted that two of the people who signed the letter had not actually been invited to the breakfast.

Mr. Bloomberg did not address the controversy in his remarks at the breakfast, and the event attracted no protesters, although there was a substantial police presence outside. The crowd of 368 guests ? larger than at last year?s event and including a number of Muslims ? gave Mr. Bloomberg a standing ovation when he rose to speak.

However, one Muslim who attended, Hussein Rashid, 37, signaled his protest by wearing a T-shirt that said, ?I AM NOT A TERRORIST.?

Mr. Rashid, a visiting professor of religion at Hofstra University, said that he was troubled by the mayor?s denial of the reports, and that an independent investigation was needed.

?We know N.Y.P.D.?s track record on self-policing. What we need is an open and honest investigation,? he said.

He said he sympathized with those who chose to boycott the breakfast, but that he thought it was a constructive event and important for him to attend.

Mr. Rashid chose to keep his opinions to himself ? or at least to his T-shirt ? during the breakfast.

That was not the case, however, with the Rev. Bill Devlin, an evangelical pastor, who was upset by a separate issue.

As Mr. Bloomberg took the stage to deliver his remarks, the Rev. Devlin rose to protest a decision by the city to eject churches and religious groups that hold prayer service in schools.

The city has set Feb. 12 as the day by when religious groups can no longer worship in schools. The deadline was imposed after the Supreme Court declined to review a lower court ruling that backed the city?s decision to ban a Bronx congregation from holding its services at a public school.

?We love you, Mayor Mike?we love you,? Mr. Devlin began, before adding, ?But please don?t kick out our houses of worship from our city schools.?

?I hear you ? we?ll be happy to talk about that,? Mr. Bloomberg said, before continuing with his planned remarks.

After Mr. Bloomberg finished speaking, the Rev. Devlin said of the city?s decision. ?We feel that this is discriminatory. If the mayor wants our support, we want his support.?

As for his brief disruption of the breakfast, the Rev. Devlin said, ?I got his attention, so, as Tom Cruise says, ?Mission accomplished.??

Mr. Bloomberg spoke about how congregations could use social media to connect to city government and encouraged nonprofit groups to submit proposals to play a role in the city?s Young Men?s Initiative, a campaign aimed at improving health and educational achievement for young black and Latino men. Mr. Kelly, the police commissioner, also attended the breakfast and lingered, after the remarks were over, shaking hands and posing for photographs with guests.

Although no one directly confronted Mr. Bloomberg at the breakfast about the surveillance controversy, he was asked about it earlier on Friday, during his weekly radio interview with John Gambling.

?I thought some of the reporting about is it just not accurate or even really responsible,? Mr. Bloomberg said. ?We go where the potential threats are reported to be. It?s like saying you?re going after people that are my height with brown hair. If the perp is described that way in the neighborhood, you look at everybody in the neighborhood that?s got brown hair, my height, and you stop them.?

Now you need one for long (demographic) waves. As in, Generation A grows up during a crash, saves strongly, creates conditions for growth. Generation B thinks their parents are foolish Scrooges, spends, increasing growth but building up debt. Generation C sees grows up during debt-fueled growth, enjoys the good times, but then has to deal with the crash. Repeat.

  2. B_Lev Says:

A number of the cycle charts show ?rising inflation? as a characteristic of an economy slowing/ entering a recession. At the same time, the charts suggest stocks and commodity prices start falling. Is this contradiction apparent?

Why are prices increasing during a recession when (presumably) velocity slows? Outside of the 70?s stagflation or Volcker ?ringing out? inflation by inducing a recession (contractionary monetary) in the early 80?s, why would we associate a recession with increasing prices? Text Book. Inflation is expansionary. Right?

I find this helpful. Investment professionals know this but it?s helpful to see visually. The problem that I see is identifying where you are currently in the cycle. I thought I knew but I am not so sure anymore?.

Elected officials must make a stronger investment in science and innovation in 2012

WASHINGTONDecember 29, 2011 Research!America Chair John Edward Porter today called on elected officials to make a stronger investment in medical research in the new year to improve the health of Americans, maintain the nation's global competitiveness and boost the economy.

"As we wrap-up a turbulent year for government funded programs, we're pleased that bipartisan support for medical research remains a hallmark of Congress' commitment to science and innovation," said Porter. "Increased funding for federal health agencies will help scientists continue to fight deadly and disabling diseases, enhance preventive care and enable creative solutions to help speed safe and effective medical innovations to patients. But there is still more work ahead as we face potential cuts to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other agencies in the near future. "

The NIH received a $299 million increase and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a $38 million increase in the FY 2012 appropriations bill while many other agencies and programs were flat-funded or cut. "The NIH and CDC are lynchpin agencies that support advances in life-saving medical treatments and research to preserve our nation's critical public health infrastructure," Porter added.

The Conference Agreement approved the creation of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) which promotes collaborative efforts by the public and private sector to quickly and efficiently maximize the potential inherent in scientific discoveries.

The Food and Drug Administration and the National Science Foundation also received modest increases, ensuring the health and safety of Americans and the progress of science. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which plays a pivotal role in improving health care quality and delivery, did not fare as well, receiving a cut of about $3million.

Health research faces even more budgetary challenges in 2012 and beyond. "With an eight percent overall budget cut set for 2013, there is immense pressure on Congress to cut critical funding to agencies suchs as NIH, and we must continue to demonstrate the value of this funding for the health and economic wellbeing of our nation," Porter said. "It is mission-critical that medical research not be subjected to pervasive cuts that could damage our country's reputation as a leader in health research and delivery. "

According to a public opinion poll commissioned by Research!America, 77 percent of Americans believe the U.S. is losing its global competitive edge in science, technology and innovation and 54 percent believe the U.S. doesn't have the best health care system in the world.

"Americans see health research as part of the solution in improving the economy and Americans' quality of life, and our elected officials and candidates for office need to recognize and value it in the same regard," Porter noted. "We are committed to working with Congress in the new year to ensure the stature of U.S. health research and the success of this and future generations of scientists."

(AP) ? The goodwill that Mayor Michael Bloomberg built among Muslims with his support of the planned mosque near ground zero was threatened this week as Islamic religious and civic leaders decried a recently disclosed police effort to gather intelligence on Muslim neighborhoods.

Fifteen Muslim clerics and community figures said they will boycott the mayor's annual interfaith breakfast Friday over the surveillance program, whose existence was revealed in a series of Associated Press articles.

The breakfast, traditionally held at the historic New York Public Library building on 42nd Street, has long served as a way to showcase the city's diversity during the overlapping winter holidays.

"We felt uncomfortable going to have coffee and doughnuts with the mayor knowing that this civil liberties crisis that's affecting all New Yorkers is not going to be addressed," said Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, president of the Islamic Leadership Council of New York, a group of 35 clerics and their congregations.

He and other Muslim activists and clerics sent a letter to Bloomberg this week turning down their invitations. About three dozen other people signed the letter as supporters, including rabbis, a Roman Catholic nun, Protestant pastors and a Quaker, though it was unclear how many had been invited to the breakfast.

"I couldn't be there while knowing that the mayor supports, if not established, this warrantless spying apparatus," said Hesham El-Meligy, founder of the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island.

Activists accused Bloomberg of squandering the goodwill built up last year when he fiercely defended a proposed Islamic prayer and cultural center not far from where the World Trade Center stood. The mosque is still in the planning stages.

Bloomberg had also won praise from Muslim leaders for criticizing anti-Islamic rhetoric and offering words of compassion after fires in the Bronx killed a large Muslim family and destroyed a mosque.

"However, despite these welcome and positive actions, very disturbing revelations have come to light regarding the city's treatment of Muslim New Yorkers," the letter said.

Bloomberg's office has said it expects about two dozen Muslim leaders to attend the breakfast.

"You're going to see a big turnout tomorrow, and it's nice that all faiths can get together," the mayor said Thursday. Boycott participants "are going to miss a chance to have a great breakfast."

He and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have insisted their counterterrorism programs are legal.

"Contrary to assertions, the NYPD lawfully follows leads in terrorist-related investigations and does not engage in the kind of wholesale spying on communities that was falsely alleged," police spokesman Paul Browne said in an email Thursday.

However, records examined by the AP show the police department collected information on people who were neither accused nor suspected of wrongdoing.

The AP series detailed police department efforts to infiltrate Muslim neighborhoods and mosques with aggressive programs designed by a CIA officer. Documents reviewed by the AP revealed that undercover police officers known as "rakers" visited businesses such as Islamic bookstores and cafes, chatting up store owners to determine their ethnicities and gauge their views. They also played cricket and eavesdropped in ethnic clubs.

The surveillance efforts have been credited with enabling police to thwart a 2004 plot to bomb the Herald Square subway station.

Critics said the efforts amount to ethnic profiling and violate court guidelines that limit how and why police can collect intelligence before there is evidence of a crime. They have asked a judge to issue a restraining order against the police.

Participants in the boycott said they feel betrayed by the city.

"Civic engagement is a two-way street. We've done our part as a community; we're waiting for the city to do their part," said Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab-American Association of New York.

Other Muslim leaders said they disagreed with the boycott.

"I believe that engagement is more important. I think everyone disagrees with the way the NYPD is penetrating the community, but I think generalizing everything else as bad is not appropriate," said Imam Shamsi Ali of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. "The mayor's not perfect, but there are many things about him we need to appreciate. And I think working with him is a way of appreciation."

The surveillance has revealed deep divisions in the city a decade after 9/11. Many New Yorkers say they empathize with Muslims living under the pall of suspicion, but also support aggressive police efforts against would-be terrorists.

The New York Daily News and New York Post defended the police in editorials this week, with the Daily News calling the AP's reporting "overheated, overhyped."

The AP's senior managing editor, Michael Oreskes, sent a letter to the newspaper Thursday in defense of the news organization.

"These were stories about where our city was drawing the line in protecting New Yorkers from another 9/11 attack," Oreskes wrote. "The stories were based on extensive reporting and documents. It is a journalist's job to report the activities of government. It is up to citizens to decide about those activities."

US military report shares blame on NATO bombing of Pakistani soldiers (VIDEO)

Relations between US and Pakistan have soured so much that the report on the NATO bombing is likely to have little effect. Instead, Pakistanis fret about rumors of a possible military coup.

A US military investigation into the Nov. 26 NATO bombardment of two Pakistani checkpoints has cast blame on both the Americans and the Pakistanis. The report, released yesterday, said that the Americans failed to share crucial information about their future military movements because its commanders didn?t trust their Pakistani counterparts, but also said that Pakistani troops fired on a joint US-Afghan patrol, even after the joint patrol identified itself.

NATO bombs killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, an event that worsened already bad relations between the two supposed allies. The report doesn?t appear to have improved matters. Pakistani military officials rejected the report, with Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas calling it ?short on facts.?

?Pakistan?s army does not agree with the findings of the US/Nato inquiry as being reported in the media,? Gen. Abbas told reporters in Islamabad. ?The inquiry report is short on facts.?

The Nov. 26 incident occurred when a joint US-Afghan commando raid on a supposed militant camp on the Afghan-Pakistan border apparently stumbled onto a Pakistani paramilitary force instead. US investigators say the Afghans and Americans came under fire, and called in for air support when the Pakistani patrol continued to fire.

The Afghan-Pakistani border is notoriously porous and poorly marked, so in a sense, it is surprising that more of these events don?t occur. It is likely that the US and Afghan patrol would have operated with GPS equipment, with villages, border lines, and specific coordinates for their target clearly marked at all times. But the winding trails that border residents take to reach pastureland or marketplaces don?t respect boundaries, and it?s plausible that either the joint Afghan-US patrol and the Pakistani soldiers may have gone astray.

The Nov. 26 NATO bombing attack couldn?t have come at a worse time in US-Pakistani relations. Many Pakistanis were already angered by a series of US military drone attacks within Pakistani airspace, the arrest of a CIA contractor Raymond Davis in a double-murder case, and finally, the US military raid, on Pakistani soil, that killed Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in the town of Abbottabad on May 1.

Barbecue Pork Ribs ? Chinese-Style

There?s no doubt that melt-in-your mouth barbecue ribs are hard to beat. That easily explains the popularity of places such as Famous Dave?s and Arthur Bryant?s.

Both of those establishments feature Midwest-style ribs ? Famous Dave?s in the St. Louis-style and Arthur Bryant?s in Kansas City tradition. I?ve eaten the ribs of both and find them most tantalizing, but there are other ways to fix pork ribs that are as equally tasty.

One such way is the following Chinese recipe that I came across recently. The ribs are coated with a glistening honey sauce and have a peppery bite. And according to the article I read, the glaze is delightfully sticky, making finger licking a necessity.

And that?s the way barbecue ribs are supposed to be.

Barbecue Pork Ribs
3 pounds pork ribs, spare ribs or baby backs
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
? cup rice wine
? to ? cup Chinese spare rib sauce, preferably Lee Kum Kee brand
? cup plus 2 tablespoons honey
In a large baking dish, rub the ribs with the sugar, salt, black pepper and rice wine. Pour over the spare rib sauce and rub it onto the ribs. Cover and place the ribs in the refrigerator to marinate, at least 4 hours but preferably overnight.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the ribs in a large roasting pan, pouring over any extra liquid. Bake the ribs for 30 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and brush the honey on the ribs. Place the pan back in the oven and continue to bake for another 30 minutes, or until the ribs are done. Place under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes to crisp the outer layer of the ribs, if desired, before serving.
Yield: Serves 6.
Approximate nutritional analysis per serving: 622 calories, 33 grams protein, 48 grams carbohydrates, no fiber, 32 grams fat (12 grams saturated), 128 milligrams cholesterol, 45 grams sugar, 2,995 milligrams sodium.

Microwave Cooking Does Not Cause Cancer: ARPANSA

Microwave Cooking Does Not Cause Cancer: ARPANSA

Radiations are of several types and are grouped under the categories of ionizing and non- ionizing radiations.

Ionizing radiations could be harmful as the energy can get into the cells and change the chemical composition and working of the cells. Too much exposure to ionizing radiation can cause burns, radiation sickness, and cancer. Ionizing radiation can damage any cell in the body. But it all depends on? how much radiation the cell gets.?

Non-ionizing radiation does not carry enough energy to change cells chemically. The radiation from the microwave oven is non-ionizing. Other examples of such radiation are UV rays from the sun, electromagnetic fields, radiowaves, and radiation waves from household electrical appliances etc.

Microwaves are non-ionizing radiations and are a part of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. They are very high frequency radio waves. Infrared radiation, ultraviolet light and X-rays are also? electromagnetic radiations, but have shorter wavelengths than microwaves.

Metallic materials reflect microwaves whereas most non-metallic materials such as glass and plastics are partially transparent to microwaves. Food and even people, absorb microwave energy. An electronic device called a magnetron is used to produce microwaves. These microwaves then pass into the oven cavity where they are reflected around the oven walls and absorbed by the food placed in the oven. Microwaves penetrate the food or liquid and agitate the water molecules in the food to cause molecular friction, thereby producing heat. This results in a rapid rise in temperature. ?

Extensive researches have provided no substantiated evidence that microwave exposure, at any level, could either cause or promote cancer. Microwaves generated in microwave ovens do not exist once the electrical power to the magnetron is turned off. They do not remain in the food once the power is turned off. Going by this logic they cannot make the food or the oven, radioactive. Therefore the food cooked in a microwave oven cannot be straight away labeled as a radiation hazard.?

All microwave ovens have at least two safety interlock switches which stop the generation of microwaves immediately when the door is opened. The design of microwave ovens is such that the microwaves should be contained within the oven, but it is still possible for some leakage to occur around the doors of certain microwave ovens. ?

There are tests which assess the level of microwave leakage and according to the Australian/New Zealand Standard for Household appliances, ?the microwave leakage at any point 50 millimetres or more from the external surface of the appliance shall not exceed 50 watts per square metre'. The experts view the recommended limit as conservative and feel that leakage levels moderately above the limit will have no adverse effects on health.?

However, organizations providing testing services say that the microwave oven leakage in excess of the recommendations is rare and an oven in good condition and used appropriately is safe.

Studies are looking at the possible link between microwave ovens and cancer. Some studies suggest that there may be a link but other studies haven?t been able to prove this at all. Microwaves produce a magnetic field while they are in use. But this doesn?t tend to last long as we tend to cook for very short periods. The emission stops once the door is opened. ?

Most experts say that microwave ovens don?t give off enough energy to change or damage the ?genetic material (DNA) in cells. So they definitely cannot cause cancer.

Although microwaves are safe to use, cooking in them can affect the nutritional value of some foods, viz., loss of vitamins from fruit and vegetables. But nutrients are lost when heating foods irrespective of the cooking method employed ? boiling, grilling, frying or even steaming. It is the extent of cooking and water loss from the food that are the major determinants of the nutrient content of a ?food.?

Vitamins are extremely heat sensitive and water soluble. Cooking food on very high temperature for a long time such as in baking, frying or draining away the water used during cooking are reasons for major nutrient losses. ?

The best way to keep as many nutrients as possible in the food is to use as little water as you can and not overcook them. Therefore as long as we do not overcook the food, microwave cooking can actually be quite healthy since it uses only a little water and cooks or warms the food in just a few minutes.?

MULTIPLAYER:

We believe in good sportsmanship. So please try to keep your sportsmanship when you HUMILIATE your friends in our Multiplayer mode.

Both players are given the same set of 7 letters and are faced against each other in a Word Boom deathmatch. Race to fill in as many shared empty word blocks as possible. The player with the most points at the end of the round is crowned the Victor.

But that's not all. Each player is given 3 Power Ups to use during the match. You can send a rocket to blow up their words or send a fog to cover their screen. So don't be surprised when time is winding down with you in the lead, and all of a sudden, your opponent steals your word in the last few seconds to win the game. That's Word Boom.

Islamists kill dozens in Nigeria Christmas bombs (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.

A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.

Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.

Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.

"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE

Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.

Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, centre and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.

At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.

"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) for ever. It will end one day."

The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

Jimmy Kimmel is making children cry again, asking parents to videotape them being given terrible Christmas presents. Image Credit: Wenn.com. I have to say, I feel especially sorry for the young girl whose mother gave her a sandwich for Christmas. The girl?s brother fared no better, getting a large toenail clipper as his ?special Christmas present? this year. He even offers to eat whats left of the sandwich since his sister does not appreciate it. Of course, we have at least one spot of a child getting very upset.
