Legal challenge on badger culling

The Badger Trust has launched a new legal challenge to the government's plans to cull badgers in England.
In December, the government announced finalised plans for a cull, initially in pilot areas, as a way to curb the spread of tuberculosis in cattle.
In applying for judicial review, the Badger Trust says culling will not stop TB and may in fact help spread it.
Other campaign groups are considering action under the Bern Convention, which protects European wildlife.
The government's plans are likely to result in farmers funding contractors to shoot badgers in a number of areas of England, with two initial pilots in west Gloucestershire and west Somerset taking place later this year.
"We have identified some serious flaws in the way by which the Secretary of State [Caroline Spelman] reached her decision to cull badgers," said Gwendolen Morgan of Bindmans solicitors, lawyer for the Badger Trust.
"Given that Defra's proposals come at an enormous cost to farmers, and threaten to prompt rather than prevent the spread of disease, we hope that this ill-conceived decision will be struck down by the court."
She pointed to government projections that culling would reduce TB incidence by 12-16% over nine years.
The Protection of Badgers Act says licences to kill can be granted for "preventing the spread of disease" - and the trust argues that the small reduction projected by Defra does not qualify as "preventing".
It also says the government's plan to have Natural England issue culling licences is illegal, as the Secretary of State is the only person entitled to do so.

In the landmark UK study, the Randomised Badger Culling Trial (RBCT), badgers were trapped before being shot.
However, the government plans to allow licensed contractors to shoot badgers as they roam - "free shooting" - which is likely to be less efficient and to increase disruption of badger families.
The RBCT showed that when badger's social groups are disrupted, they roam further, carrying the TB bacterium to more farms.
For this reason, the trust argues that after the pilots, farmers may be forced to resort to trap-and-shoot, because free shooting will either prove ineffective or a hazard to public safety.
That would escalate the cost by anything up to a factor of 10 - and the Badger Trust says this possibility damages the government's economic case for a cull.
As the majority of new cases arise through infection from other cattle rather than from badgers, the trust says the government should simply invest in stricter cattle control measures.
Regulations on farmers were recently tightened and testing regimes intensified - but the National Farmers' Union, the government and other proponents believe culling is needed in badly affected areas in addition to existing measures.
In 2010, 25,000 cattle were slaughtered as a result of TB infection, and the disease is costing the UK taxpayer in the region of ?100m per year.
They also argue that culling would in the end benefit badgers, as TB infection is seriously debilitating to them.
"Nobody wants to see badgers culled, but no country in the world where wildlife carries TB has successfully controlled the disease in cattle without tackling its presence in wildlife as well," said a Defra spokeswoman.
"Unless further action is taken now, it will continue to get worse."
Badgers are protected under UK law, and also under the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats.
Campaigners are also considering using this as another weapon to use in the long-running battle over culling.
Last year, wildlife groups began programmes of vaccination, and some animal groups believe this will in the end remove any need for culling.
The Welsh Assembly Government is due to announce its decision on a proposed pilot cull in West Wales early this year.

Pineapple Marinated Pulled Pork w/ Hoisin Pineapple BBQ Sauce ...
We?re eating pineapple marinated pulled pork tossed with a pineapple hoisin bbq sauce on fresh ciabatta bread w/ creamy, tangy Asian-style coleslaw.
Having been raised in Virginia, I?ve eaten my share of pulled pork and know and love it intimately. Especially the tangy North Carolina style that uses a vinegar based barbecue sauce. Every time I go to make pulled pork my heartstrings almost always win out and I make some variation of this style. Fortunately for you guys, I persevered this time! Screw you, nostalgic heartstrings. Who needs flavors of home when you can have flavors of Asia all up in your pulled pork sandwich. 
Hell, I should have just pickled some vegetables, thrown on some cilantro and called this a ghetto banh mi? but I didn?t. I let some of that damn nostalgia come in and topped my sandwich with some good old coleslaw and hot sauce ? just like the sandwiches I at so many of as a child.
In addition to the flavor differences, my preparation methods are very different for this version of pulled pork. First off, instead of marinating the pork in a dry rub, I marinated it in a combo of minced uber-sweet fresh pineapple and loads of garlic for about 24 hours. Secondly ? instead of my traditional tried and true methods of low and slow smoking or oven-roasting, I turned to my crockpot. I mean, February is, after all, slow cooker month! Why not celebrate it by letting my pork shoulder turn into dinner while I go out and get drinks, er, do work at an art festival. I put the marinated shoulder into the slow-cooker with some water and a tub of Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock, turned that puppy on then walked away. Did you guys get a chance to celebrate the fact that February was slow-cooker month? It?s not to late ? in case you forgot it?s a leap year this year! You have a whole day to hop on it!

Pineapple Marinated Pulled Pork with Hoisin-Pineapple Bbq Sauce
For the Pork:
3 cups fresh ripe pineapple, minced or food processed
cloves from 1 bulb garlic, peeled & minced
2 tbsp sambal oelek
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
1 (approximately 5lb) bone-in pork shoulder
butcher's twine
1 1/2 cups water
1 tub Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock
For the BBQ Sauce:
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
1/2 cup fresh ripe pineapple, pureed
1/2 tsp chinese five spice
In a bowl, mix together the first 5 ingredients for the pork to create the marinade. Butterfly the pork shoulder, then stuff with a cup of the marinade. Using butcher's twine, tie the pork shoulder back into one even roast. Place stuffed shoulder into a larger resealable plastic bag. Pour the rest of the marinade over the roast, coating evenly. Seal the plastic bag, removing as much air as possible. Marinate pork for 12 to 24 hours, refrigerated.
Place the pork, marinade, 1 1/2 cups water & Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock into a slow cooker on the low setting. Slow cook, covered, 8-10 hours or until the pork is falling apart. Remove from slow cooker, cut off butchers twine, then shred the pork, discarding any excess fat or bones.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the barbecue sauce. Toss the pulled pork with the barbecue sauce until moistened to desired level. Taste and adjust season with more sauce or salt and pepper as desired. Great served on ciabatta rolls with an Asian-style slaw.

[Abstract]
The female pelvic cavity is an important region with a great many viscera. There are consanguineous affinities in urinary system, genitalia system and digestive system in female pelvic cavity. It is very useful in clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the female pelvic cavity to recognize the complicated distribution and extensity of the anatomical structures in the female pelvic cavity through thin sectional anatomy and three-dimensional visualization. In this study, the acquisition technique of the visible human data set was used to obtain the visible female pelvic cavity. Meanwhile, the images of the female pelvic cavity were observed meticulously. After being registered accurately with Photoshop 7.0 software, the sectional images of the data set of anatomical structures in female pelvic cavity were reconstructed with 3D DOCTOR 3.5 and 3D Lancet 2.0 software on personal computer. With the support of visualization software Virtual Reality 1.0 which was provided by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and 3D Lancet 2.0 which was developed by our research group, the data set of the female pelvic cavity was visualized and displayed in three-dimensional space on personal computer. At the same time, the anatomic structures in female pelvic cavity could be observed clearly at any angle. The main results and conclusions were as follows.1. The 4 series (3 series pelvic data set with transverse and 1 series pelvic data set with sagittal planes) continuous thin sectional anatomy of female pelvic data set were obtained by the acquisition technique of the visible human data set. The thinnest serial sections of pelvic layer were sampled at 0.2mm. And the resolution of sectional image reaches to 1,100,000 pixels, with each TIFF, file occupying 31.5MB.2. After being matched accurately, the thin sectional images of 1 series pelvic data set with transverse planes were compared with the CT and MRI of the female pelvic cavity from the visible human data set. The anatomic structures of the female pelvic images were observed and measured.3. After being recognized and segmented by the Photoshop software, each importantstructures in the female pelvic cavity including the pelvis, the uterus, the ovary, the ureter, the vesica, the internal iliac vein and artery, external iliac vein and artery were reconstructed with 3D DOCTOR 3.5 and 3D Lancet 2.0 software on personal computer.4. Enlightened by the think of digital brain atlas of Talairach, the tri-dimensional coordinate system was established on the symbol of typical anatomic structures on tri-dimensional model of the female pelvic, which can be used for study minute anatomic structures, for medical image fusion and registration, for model driven segmentation and for the teaching of anatomy.5. The creation of visible female pelvic model can be used for the digital anatomy teaching, and for the gynecological surgical navigation planning and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy of female pelvic cancer.6. Take example for radiotherapy of cervical cancer, the continuous thin sectional anatomy of female pelvic data were used to study the anatomical morphology and the clinical dosemetry of radiotherapy fields in radiation treatment planning for cervical cancers.

But is that fair? It may sound selfish, but what if that something could make us better at all of those daily tasks? That something is exercise.
No else can exercise for you. No one else can lift a weight. No one else can get on the treadmill. No one else can attend a group fitness class for you. Exercise is something that only you can do for you. You can?t ask someone to do you a favor and workout for you. You can?t delegate exercise to someone else. The benefits of exercise have been well documented. Most studies I have read, relate to on the job performance, but it isn?t hard to transfer that over to how we parent. And for those of us for whom daddy duty is a full time job, our daily performance is all the more important. People who exercise are more productive each day. They accomplish more in a more efficient manner. They are more alert and able to make better, clearer decisions, multi tasking. Show me a dad who doesn?t try to multi-task to get everything done.
Then when the work is ?done?, you will have more energy for the fun stuff, like rolling on the floor and playing games with your kids. Most importantly, you get sick less. Making it easier to do all of the above more often. This means extra days with your kids and being able to give them 100% at every moment. Less sick days, less doctor visits. This all rounds out to say that by exercising, you will be setting a healthy example for your kids. Our kids see my wife and I coming back from the gym several days a week. Does that mean that they are asking to join the gym? No. But what they do ask about is why we do it, eating healthy, and they look forward to getting outside and getting their own exercise. They see it makes us feel better. As we all know they will have plenty of time to sit when they are older. For now they can enjoy all the playgrounds, fields, and gymnastics studios that New York City provides.
The biggest excuse I hear about not exercising is, I don?t have time. My advice is think small at first. You can get a great workout done in 20 minutes. For some reason, people have this idea that if you don?t have one-hour everyday to workout, then why bother. Yes, NYC fitness classes and personal training NYC sessions can last up to an hour, but that doesn?t mean that every workout has to last one hour. Aim for 20 minutes a few days a week. NYC Exercise is contagious. Some days you may find the motivation to stay an extra 20-30 minutes and other days you achieve your 20 minutes. More importantly, if you can go on a consistent basis, you will see change. If you need help figuring out what to do for 20 minutes, there are people who can create a program for you.
?Parenting can be frustrating at times,? says Lance Somerfeld. I believe that exercise makes me a better father. That may not be true for everyone, but it is for me. Some days I can get in 45 minutes, and on others only 15-20, but I am in a better frame of mind having done some exercise instead of nothing. When you were 13 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A wildlife manager. I was seriously into Girl Scouting. I?m still handy with a jackknife.
Is the foundation into new media?
About 30 percent of our time is spent on new media. Our website is our workhorse, our communication strategy is focused on sending traffic to it. We use Facebook and Twitter to do that.
Do you do an annual communications plan?
I love a good communication plan, write one every year and follow it as best we can. Keeps my adult ADD in check.

Journalism. I wanted to switch to English in my senior year, but my parents who were paying the tuition bill put the kibosh on that idea.

We evaluate via donor response, both in donations and traffic created for our development counterparts. We also evaluate web analytics and social media traffic to determine message reach and reaction.

The mobile version of our website was the last big thing, it wasn?t that big of a deal (easy and inexpensive) but the payoff has been impressive.
