Apple patents exposure metering based on face detection, keeps friends in full view

Many photographers will tell you that their least favorite shooting situation involves a portrait with the sun to the subject's back: there's a good chance the shot ends up an unintentional silhouette study unless the shooter meters just perfectly from that grinning face. Apple has just been granted a patent for the metering technique that takes all the guesswork out of those human-focused shots on an iOS 5 device like the iPhone 4S or new iPad. As it's designed, the invention finds faces in the scene and adjusts the camera exposure to keep them all well-lit, even if they're fidgety enough to move at the last second. Group shots are just as much of a breeze, with the software using head proximity and other factors to pick either a main face as the metering target (such as a person standing in front of a crowd) or an average if there's enough people posing for a close-up. You can explore the full details at the source. Camera-toting rivals, however, will have to explore alternative ideas.

Sony 'Xperia Tablet' details leak - Tegra 3, splashproof glass and a keyboard cover

Android Central

Since the launch of the Tablet S and Tablet P last year, little has been heard from Sony on the subject of future tablet plans. However, that changes today with the leak of a massive cache of slides detailing the company's next-generation "Xperia tablet." The slides first appeared in an XDA forum post, where the poster said the tablet would come to market in time for the holidays.

The new tablet will be "positioned as part of the Xperia family," which includes Sony's range of Android smartphones. Externally, the leaked slides indicate a thinner, lighter design, while keeping the Tablet S's trademark "wedge" design and 9.4-inch screen size. Tentative specs list the thickness as 8.8mm at the bottom of the wedge, and 11.85 at the top. The device is said to weigh 570 grams, down from 598. And in contrast to the plastic chassis of Sony's earlier tablet, the new model will be constructed of anodized aluminum-magnesium alloy and splashproof glass. Screen resolution looks set to remain at 1280x800 pixels (WXGA).

Internally, the Xperia tablet will apparently sport an NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU with 16, 32 or 64GB of storage, and the camera specs have been bumped up to 1MP on the front and 8MP around the back. Battery life is estimated at 10 hours of Wifi browsing, on a 6000mAh battery. Interestingly, the OS version is marked as "ICS or later," suggesting the possibility that the Xperia tablet will ship with Jelly Bean at launch.

In addition to Android 4-point-something, you can expect the full Sony Entertainment Network suite, including PlayStation support and access to the Sony Reader store for e-books. A range of third-party apps are mentioned in the slides too, including the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Picasa, Box.net, Skype and Facebook, which may be pre-loaded.

A range of accessories is promised too, including stands, carrying cases, and a Microsoft Surface-style keyboard cover (though there's no indication of whether this works the same as Microsoft's offering). Tentative pricing starts at $449.99 for the 16GB version. 32GB is set for $549.99, and 64GB for $649.99.

With the IFA show just around the corner, and Sony confirmed to be in attendance, we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for a possible unveiling in Berlin late next month. For more details, check the slides after the break.

Gold Prices Inches Up, Silver Prices also Gain | Stock Market News

Gold Prices inched higher on Tuesday as stronger euro and hopes of some fresh economic stimulating measures from the central banks attracted bullion investing; but gains were limited as investors doubt whether European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi will be able to match his words with some concrete actions. Silver prices also edged higher on Tuesday.

Bayram Dincer, an analyst at LGT Capital Management said to Reuters that (notwithstanding Draghi?s comment), market anticipation concerning additional monetary easing is highly optimistic.

All eyes will be focused on Federal Reserve?s two-day open market meeting which starts from Tuesday.

After recent series of disappointing economic indicators, expectations are widespread that fed will finally offer some sort of monetary easing, aimed at boosting the stalling U.S. economy.

In its note to investors, HSBC bank wrote, ?Some of the tools the Fed could use (to stimulate growth) include extending the use of quantitative easing, extending (its bond-buying program) ?Operation Twist,? or employing new tools such as cutting interest on reserves, or extending interest rate guidance.?

Gold futures for August delivery inched up 0.2%, at $1,623 an ounce.

An ECB insider also hinted on Monday that ECB might also resume its bond buying program and could even print more money in order to lift assets? prices.

If fed does provide any additional monetary support then the yellow metal is likely to gain as its price is highly correlated to fed?s policy stance.

Meanwhile, Swiss bank UBS on Tuesday raised its one-month gold forecast to $1,700 an ounce from $1,550. The bank believes that Fed?s Jackson Hole meeting will play a crucial role in deciding gold?s possible course of prices ahead of September FOMC meeting.

In the physical market side, buying was weak as continued rally in the bullion market kept dealers in the sidelines.

Some other precious metal markets were also gaining on Tuesday with silver moving up 0.6%, at $28.30 an ounce.? Spot platinum edged up 0.5%, at $ 1,417.74 an ounce and spot palladium climbed up 0.8%, at $588.25 an ounce.

In pre-market trading in New York, the iShares Silver Trust (ETF) (NYSE: SLV) was up 0.18%, the ProShares Ultra Silver (ETF) (NYSE: AGQ) was up 0.53%, and the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ETF) (NYSE: ZSL) was inactive.

HSBC faces U.S. compliance issues, Libor scrutiny

LONDON (Reuters) - The threat that HSBC faces a big U.S. fine for lax controls in its anti-money laundering systems and the risk it will be pulled deeper into an interest rate manipulation probe are set to overshadow strong half-year profits on Monday.

HSBC, Europe's biggest bank, is expected to unveil a half-year pretax profit of more than $12 billion, making it one of the most profitable lenders in the world.

Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver is mid-way through a deep overhaul to cut costs, sell or shrink unprofitable businesses, and to direct investment to faster growing Asian markets.

But a Libor interest rate rigging scandal that erupted a month ago at UK rival Barclays is expected to draw in more banks and investors are nervous about who that will be. Barclays was fined $453 million for its Libor manipulation and more than a dozen banks are being investigated by regulators around the world.

"We expect investors to focus on the potential fines for the improper monitoring of money laundering activities and Libor litigation," said Andrew Lim, an analyst at Espirito Santo.

A scathing report this month by the U.S. Senate slammed HSBC for letting clients shift funds from dangerous and secretive countries, which could result in a fine of about $1 billion, analysts said.

The Senate report criticized a "pervasively polluted" culture at the bank and said between 2007 and 2008, HSBC's Mexican operations moved $7 billion into the bank's U.S. operations.

HSBC may have to set aside hundreds of millions of dollars to cover costs related to the U.S. money laundering and on two UK mis-selling issues -- on insurance products and interest rate swaps for small firms. The bank declined to comment on Sunday.

The bank is expected to show a fall in investment banking revenue in the second quarter from a strong first quarter, continuing a trend seen among top U.S. and European banks.

Lim at Espirito Santo predicted HSBC's investment bank revenues would be down 20 percent from the first quarter as fixed income revenue drops by about a third.

Cost control will remain a key feature for Gulliver, who is struggling to cut costs to below 52 percent of revenue. In the first quarter it improved to 55 percent and analysts said he needs to show the declining trend has continued.

HSBC made an underlying profit of $6.8 billion in the first quarter.

Gulliver has said previously he wants to streamline HSBC and focus more on its fast-growing Asian markets. As a result, the latest quarter should show loan growth in Hong Kong and Asia and a gain in market share in areas such as trade finance.

Sunday Brunch: Gluten Free, Vegan Bread Zucchini Waffles with ...

photo 1 (2)

Hey friends! Hope you?ve been enjoying restful, happy weekends so far. These last two days have been my final gasp of free time before my summer semester ends, so I?ve been soaking up every bit of restfulness I can. This includes a lovely brunch this morning at Andrea?s house, complete with wholesome, healthy, and delicious vegan fare!

Yesterday, as we were planning our meal, Andrea let me know that she was making zucchini pancakes, and would I? perhaps bring a topping? I responded that I?d be glad to. I brought three different things so that we?d have a range of options, but the standout was a fantastic mango, avocado, and heirloom tomato salad with cucumber and chives.

I?ll be honest: I struggle with chopping up heirloom tomatoes and putting them into anything, given how costly they are (and how delicious they are all on their own). But I had a tomato that was ready to be overripe, and a mango that was in the same condition. So, last night, I figured that a quite, seasonal salad would be the best way to use them up. And how better to celebrate my rather recent conversion from mango hater to mango eater?

photo 3

Quick Mango, Avocado, and Heirloom Tomato Salad (raw, vegan, gluten free, soy free)

Serves 2-4

1 ripe ataulfo mango (you can use a small Haden or Tommy Atkins mango, too, but the ataulfo will be incomparably sweet and creamy)
1 medium sized cucumber, diced
1 ripe Haas avocado, diced
1 medium heirloom tomato, diced
2 tbsp chopped chives
2 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tsp agave syrup
Sea salt to taste

Mix all ingredients together. Let marinate a few hours for maximum flavor!

If you need a hand figuring out the varieties of mango mentioned above, this link is helpful. Big thanks to Janet for giving me a useful primer in mangos a few weeks ago!

The dollop of yogurt you see in the photo above was the Amande yogurt in coconut flavor.

Coconut

Over time, I?ve found that the Amande yogurts are my favorite non-homemade vegan yogurts; I like them more than the So Delicious coconut milk yogurts (though I?m still waiting to try the Greek yogurts from that brand). The Amande yogurts are made from cultured almond milk, and while the texture isn?t nice and thick the way I love, the flavors are delicious, and the tanginess is there. Two thumbs up.

The waffles, of course, were the star of the event. And how could they not be? Perfectly sweetened, light, fluffy, and packed with zucchini, these were total winners. Notice that the pancake plan got switched to waffle midway: Andrea has a wafflemaker, and decided that it would probably be quicker and easier to prepare them that way. I eat pancakes all the time, but I haven?t had a good vegan waffle since I gave my own wafflemaker away before my move to DC (it was just way too heavy to move, given how little I used it), so I was excited about this development.

Andrea based her recipe off of a recent one from Smitten Kitchen. Modifications included omitting the egg, naturally, and she used Bob?s Red Mill GF all purpose flour in place of standard all purpose. She traded Grade B maple syrup for sugar, and added some applesauce to the mix. The recipe is posted here in its entirety, courtesy of Andrea, who was kind enough to share it with me in her home, and is now kind enough to share it with all of us on CR!

photo 2 (2)

Andrea?s Gluten Free, Vegan Zucchini Bread Waffles

Serves 2-3

Zucchini Bread Waffles (or Pancakes)

1 large zucchini, grated
1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
3 T olive oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup "soured" almond milk (to sour, add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the measuring cup, then add almond milk to measure 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons maple syrup or other sweetener to taste
1 ? 11/2 cups Bob?s Red Mill All-Purpose Flour
1/4-3/8 teaspoon xanthan gum ? according to how much flour you use
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Coconut oil spray for waffle machine or griddle

1. Heat up waffle machine or griddle.?

2. Mix dry ingredients into large bowl.? Mix wet ingredients into smaller bowl.? Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients.?

3. Spray the griddle or waffle maker. Cook waffles according to the manufacturer instructions or scoop batter onto griddle in 1/4 cup ? 1/2 cup sized dollops ? depending on how large you want your pancakes.?

And if this all wasn?t enough, Andrea also shared some of her homemade kombucha with me. Lucky, lucky me.

There?s nothing nicer than the chance to catch up with friends over good food and drink?with a little witty banter and straight talk thrown in for good measure. Thanks for brunch, Andrea!

Adviser: Romney would back strike against Iran

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A senior adviser says Mitt Romney would back an Israeli military strike against Iran aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear capability.

Ahead of a Sunday speech in Jerusalem, Romney foreign policy adviser Dan Senor tells reporters that "if Israel has to take action on its own" to prevent Iran from being able to make the materials that could be used for a bomb, Romney "would respect that decision."

That's a more aggressive posture than Romney has previously taken. In Sunday's speech, he plans to tell Israelis and watching Americans that he and America "will not look away" from Iran if he is president.

Romney plans meetings with Israeli leaders Sunday.

Athletes seek to loosen sponsorship rules at Olympics

Matt Rourke / AP

U.S. runner Sanya Richards-Ross wants the the International Olympic Committee to loosen its policy barring Olympic athletes from using their names or likenesses for advertising during the games.

By Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press

Money is probably not a worry for Sanya Richards-Ross. She has endorsement deals with BMW and Nike Inc. and is married to Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Aaron Ross, who will earn $15 million over the next three seasons.

But there are restrictions on what Richards-Ross and other Olympians can promote at the London Games. That has upset some competitors, who want organizers to change the policy ? especially to help athletes without lucrative sponsorship deals.

"I've been very fortunate to do very well around the Olympics, but so many of my peers struggle in this sport. And I just think it's unjust," Richards-Ross, an American sprinter, said Monday.

Richards-Ross, who also sells autographed photos and posters on her Web site, was among the athletes taking part in a Twitter campaign, using the hashtags "WeDemandChange2012" and "Rule40."

Rule 40 is the International Olympic Committee policy barring Olympic athletes from using their names or likenesses for advertising during the games. The rule is in effect from July 18 through Aug. 15, three days after the closing ceremony.

The International Olympic Committee says it pours 94 percent of its commercial revenue back into sports, and is only trying to protect the money that comes into the Olympic movement.

"A huge number of 10,500 athletes who are here would understand why we are doing this," spokesman Mark Jones said. "For one month, we ask them not to endorse products not related to the Olympics that don't actually give money back to the movement."

Sponsorship is everywhere at the Olympics ? but official sponsors only.

Richards-Ross spoke at a U.S. Track and Field news conference in the Main Press Centre at Olympic Park, where someone setting up the room neatly arranged bottles of Coca-Cola and Powerade on the dais.

A banner at a park entrance reads: "There would be no goosebumps, gasps, pounding hearts, tears of joy, records smashed, strangers hugged, or a whole world brought together without," followed by the logos of McDonald's Corp., Adidas and Procter & Gamble Co.

That may explain why U.S. flag-bearer and fencing gold medalist Mariel Zagunis was allowed to post this to her social media accounts: "Big thanks to P&G for taking care of my mom when she flew in early to watch me carry the flag in the Opening Ceremony!"

P&G has a facility in London to host families of U.S. athletes, offering food, drink, laundry and salon services. U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky said a comment like Zagunis' is permissible if the sponsor has requested a waiver from the U.S. Olympic Committee on the International Olympic Committee's behalf.

Richards-Ross said only 2 percent of American athletes can tweet about their sponsors because they have U.S. Olympic Committee or International Olympic Committee sponsors.

With the games generating billions of dollars, "Athletes just want to be considered," she said. "The Olympic reality and the Olympic ideal ... right now are different."

The Twitter campaign and International Olympic Committee response dominated part of the U.S. Track and Field news conference Monday, prompting U.S. Track and Field spokeswoman Jill Geer to good-naturedly remind reporters that "we also have a track meet coming up."

After the news conference, Richards-Ross said she was headed to a sponsor appearance with British oil giant BP PLC ? an IOC sponsor.

Seats dedicated to those with Olympic ties that have gone empty may now go to military members and students. Meanwhile, a soggy Sunday sent cyclists to the mud. NBC's Chris Jansing reports.

Best Planning For Your Garden : Info and Tips for All Topic

Posted on | July 28, 2012 | No Comments

Fortunate is the individual who has the experience and know-ledge to know exactly that he wants in a garden;who has the opportunity of planning it from the start; and who has the funds to place in it all the plants and ?fixtures? which he has decided upon. Most of us are not in that class . However, with the thousands of plants available today, selections should be made intelligently, picking those that are of ornamental interest for the longest period of time, as well as those which require the least care, or which might be termed?low maintenance? plants. Much time and effort can be saved by intelligently planning the garden, and even though one can not start withal piece of land devoid of plants, one can make the best of what is available for use. There are several important things to consider, once the house is placed on the property and the drive sand walks have been finally located.

Consider how the area is to be used. Is entertaining outdoors to be a feature? If so, a well-designed patio or terrace well hidden from the public by trees and shrubs is one of the first things to consider. A fountain, or fireplace, or certainly a place for a moveable grill for outdoor cooking is essential.

London organisers investigating empty seats

LONDON (Reuters) - London's Olympic organisers launched an investigation into empty seats on the first day of the Games on Saturday.

On a school holiday and after months of public complaints over the inability of thousands in Britain to buy tickets, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the minister responsible for the Olympics, said he was disappointed by the empty seats and that the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) were looking into it.

"LOCOG are doing a full investigation into what happened," Hunt told publicly funded broadcaster BBC one day after a widely praised opening ceremony starring Queen Elizabeth, Paul McCartney and Rowan Atkinson.

Television coverage of events on Saturday showed and visitors to venues found scores of empty seats in the early part of the day at the aquatics centre, in the basketball arena and later on at Wimbledon for the tennis. There was also plenty of space to stretch out in the Olympic Park.

"We think it was accredited seats that belong to sponsors, but if they are not going to turn up, we want those tickets to be available for members of the public, because that creates the best atmosphere. So we are looking at this very urgently at the moment," Hunt said.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said he was surprised that the events were not full.

LOCOG became used to putting up the "sold out" sign within minutes of each tranche of tickets going on sale to the public.

On Saturday some ticket box offices at venues in the park still had queues of people seeking to buy tickets for selected sports.

"I've been trying and trying every day to get (soccer) tickets for Argentina," 34-year-old Argentinian electrician Lucas Lopez told Reuters on a stroll through the park.

"Where there are empty seats, we will look at who should have been sitting in the seats, and why they did not attend. Early indications are that the empty seats are in accredited seating areas, but this is day one, and our end of day review will provide a fuller picture," LOCOG said in a statement late on Saturday.

LOCOG declined to provide a figure for the number of people in the park on Saturday or how many tickets had been sold but said that 11 million people would attend the Games.

"I was at the Beijing games in 2008 and one of the lessons we took away from that was that full stadia create the best atmosphere, it's best for the athletes, it's more fun for spectators, and it has been an absolute priority," Hunt said.

"It is a shame this happened but we are going to do everything we can to make sure we fill up those stadia."

SKEWED

By early June, 7 million of the total 8.8 million Olympic tickets had been sold, and about half of the 2.45 million Paralympic tickets, in a process that began last year.

But the combination of a complex and opaque online ticketing system which appeared unable to cope with the huge demand and seemed skewed towards those prepared to bid for thousands of pounds worth of tickets, resulted in a wary public.

About a quarter of the 928,000 tickets made available in May failed to sell, including for popular sports such as beach volleyball and boxing.

In early June, LOCOG still had about 550,000 tickets to sell with just weeks to go.

A large chunk of them were so-called contingency tickets which had been held back while logistics such as TV camera positions were resolved.

On a walk around the park, a Reuters correspondent found he could buy a burger from McDonald's at lunch time in four minutes flat from back of the queue to food in hand, plenty of empty picnic table seats at most of the eating areas and a vast Champagne & Seafood restaurant with fewer than 10 people inside.

Across the park, almost every visitor asked praised the ease of getting around, the lack of queues and the spacious feel of the park, the swift access to facilities, drinking water, open spaces and the friendliness of the staff.

Kyle Sutherland, a 22-year-old American sports management student on a course in London told Reuters he had been touring sports facilities all over Britain and been to many in the United States, but said the Olympic Park felt the most open.

"The park is so spacious it doesn't feel crowded with the amount of people in it."

(AP) ? Iran's new message to parents: Get busy and have babies.

In a major reversal of once far-reaching family planning policies, authorities are now slashing its birth-control programs in an attempt to avoid an aging demographic similar to many Western countries that are struggling to keep up with state medical and social security costs.

The changes ? announced in Iranian media last week ? came after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the country's wide-ranging contraceptive services as "wrong." The independent Shargh newspaper quoted Mohammad Esmail Motlaq, a Health Ministry official, as saying family planning programs have been cut from the budget for the current Iranian year, which began in March.

It's still unclear, however, whether the high-level appeals for bigger families will translate into a new population spike. Iran's economy is stumbling under a combination of international sanctions, inflation and double-digit unemployment. Many young people, particularly in Tehran and other large cities, are postponing marriage or keeping their families small because of the uncertainties.

Ali Reza Khamesian, a columnist whose work appears in several pro-reform newspapers, said the change in policy also may be an attempt to send a message to the world that Iran is not suffering from sanctions imposed over the nuclear program that the West suspects is aimed at producing weapons ? something Tehran denies.

Abbas Kazemi, a doorman in a private office building, said he cannot afford to have more than two children with his salary of about $220 (4.2 million rials) a month.

"I cannot afford daily life," he said. "I have to support my wife and two children as well my elderly parents."

More than half of Iran's population is under 35 years old. Those youth form the base of opposition groups, including the so-called Green Movement that led unprecedented street protests after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009. Some experts have said that trying to boost the numbers for upcoming generations also could feed future political dissent.

"Young people are the heart of the Arab Spring, or the Islamic Awakening as Iran calls it," said Mustafa Alani, an analyst at the Gulf Research Center based in Geneva. "Countries that haven't faced major protests during the Arab Spring still have to be mindful that the demands of the youth are still there."

The policy shift brings the country full circle.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, families were strongly encouraged to contribute to a baby boom demanded by leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who wanted fast population growth to contribute to a "20 million member army" in support of the ruling theocracy. In 1986, toward the end of the eight-year war with Iraq, census figures show the population's growth rate reached 3.9 percent ? among the highest in the world at the time and in line with Persian traditions that favor big families.

But the leadership just as quickly hit the brakes in the 1990s, fearing a galloping population could overwhelm the economy. Iran became a regional leader in family-planning options, including offering free or subsidized condoms and other contraceptives, and issuing religious edicts in favor of vasectomies. One clinic in Tehran promoted its vasectomy services in huge letters atop a water tower.

Banners at public health care centers urged smaller families as a path to a better life. By 2011, the most recent period for which figures are available, Iran's population growth had fallen to one of the lowest in region ? 1.3 percent.

The official policy changes began in 2005 after the election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who called the birth control measures ungodly and a Western import. In 2009, he unveiled proposals for each new baby to receive $950 in a government bank account and then get $95 every year until reaching 18.

On Wednesday, Khamenei said contraceptive policy made sense 20 years ago, "but its continuation in later years was wrong."

"Scientific and experts studies show that we will face population aging and reduction (in population) if the birth-control policy continues," said Khamenei a day after the Statistical Center of Iran said the country's population had reached more than 75.1 million ? more than double its 33.7 million in 1976.

Ali Reza Mesdaghinia, the deputy health minister, told the semiofficial Fars news agency on Sunday that population control programs "belonged to the past."

"There is no plan to keep number of the children at one or two. Families should decide about it by themselves," said Mesdaghinia. "In our culture, having a large number of children has been a tradition. In the past families had five or six children. ... The culture still exists in the rural areas. We should go back to our genuine culture."

Lawmaker Moayed Hoseini said on the parliament's website that some 100 lawmakers have signed a bill aimed at canceling the pro-family planning laws from the early 1990s.

A midwife, Fatemeh Iranmanesh, said the number of pregnancies climbed in rural areas after Ahmadinejad's promise for greater aid to families. "Sometime a pregnant mother comes to me with her last infant still breast-feeding," she said.

Injured Mali leader flies home, faces challenges

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's interim president returned on Friday from weeks convalescing abroad after he was beaten up by a mob, facing pressure to form a new government and authorize a foreign military intervention against rebels in the north.

Mali needs outside support to recover from twin crises sparked by a March coup in the capital that precipitated the rebel takeover of its northern zones, occupied by Islamists dominated by al Qaeda's North African wing, AQIM.

The head of the U.S. military's Africa Command (AFRICOM) has said AQIM is the militant organization's richest faction and the dominant force in the north.

Interim President Dioncounda Traore, who spent weeks in France recovering from injuries he sustained in May when a pro-coup mob broke into his presidential palace and beat him up, flew into Bamako's main airport in the early evening.

"I'm happy to come back on the soil where I was born. My health is improving from day to day," he said in a brief statement, as soldiers and police armed with AK-47s and wearing balaklavas kept watch.

He was accompanied by his wife and children, and a Reuters witness said the scars from his injuries were still visible as he spoke to reporters on the tarmac.

"I will answer all of your questions at the appropriate time. In life one must forgive," he said before he and his family were whisked away.

Initial statements from West African leaders that a regional force would be dispatched to help Mali retake its north have shifted to focus on resolving the simmering post-coup political crisis in the capital, where the military is accused of meddling despite having official stood aside in April.

END OF MONTH DEADLINE

West Africa's ECOWAS bloc has given Mali's political leaders until the end of the month to form a new government, replacing an interim team that has failed to stabilize a nation once seen as a model of democracy in an otherwise turbulent region.

"Mali needs to re-establish broad democratic legitimacy through a unity government whose task will be to first restore security in the south and then in the north," Laurent Fabius, France's foreign minister, said on in Niamey on Friday.

Underscoring the atmosphere of perpetual instability, New York-based Human Rights Watch this week accused soldiers loyal to the coup leader of having "disappeared" at least 20 soldiers who tried to challenge his authority.

The rights group said the security forces also have engaged in a campaign of intimidation against journalists, family members of detained soldiers and others deemed a threat.

Members of the junta have not responded to the allegations.

The March 22 coup was universally condemned abroad but the reaction in cotton- and gold-producing Mali was mixed, with some praising the removal of a political class they said was corrupt.

This pro-coup camp has broadly called for interim prime minister Cheick Modibo Diarra, a former NASA astrophysicist and political novice seen close to the former junta, to remain and they remain hostile to foreign military intervention.

But the anti-coup coalition has called for his replacement and is advocating strongly for it.

According to ECOWAS planners, once stability has been restored to the institutions in the capital, regional militaries will help revamp Mali's defeated military and look at helping it retake the north, however details remain sketchy.

Boys' impulsiveness may result in better math ability

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? In a University of Missouri study, girls and boys started grade school with different approaches to solving arithmetic problems, with girls favoring a slow and accurate approach and boys a faster but more error prone approach. Girls' approach gave them an early advantage, but by the end of sixth grade boys had surpassed the girls. The MU study found that boys showed more preference for solving arithmetic problems by reciting an answer from memory, whereas girls were more likely to compute the answer by counting. Understanding these results may help teachers and parents guide students better.

"The observed difference in arithmetic accuracy between the sexes may arise from a the willingness to risk being wrong by answering from memory before one is sure of the correct answer," said Drew Bailey, a recent recipient of a Ph.D. in psychological science from MU. "In our study, we found that boys were more likely to call out answers than girls, even though they were less accurate early in school. Over time, though, this practice at remembering answers may have allowed boys to surpass girls in accuracy."

The MU study followed approximately 300 children as they progressed from first to sixth grade. In the first and second grades, the boys' tendency to give an answer quickly led to more answers in total, but also more wrong answers. Girls, on the other hand, were right more often, but responded more slowly and to fewer questions. By sixth grade, the boys were answering more problems and getting more correct.

"Developing mathematical skill may be part 'practice makes perfect' and part 'perfect makes practice,'" Bailey said. "Attempting more answers from memory gives risk-takers more practice, which may eventually lead to improvements in accuracy. It also is possible that children who are skilled at certain strategies are more likely to use them and therefore acquire more practice."

"Parents can give their children an advantage by making them comfortable with numbers and basic math before they start grade school, so that the children will have fewer trepidations about calling out answers," said David Geary, MU professor of psychological science and co-author of the study. "As an adult, it seems easy to remember basic math facts, but in children's brains the networks are still forming. It could be that trying to answer a problem from memory engages those networks and improves them, even if the answers aren't correct at first. In time, the brain develops improved memories and more correct answers result."

The study, "The codevelopment of skill at and preference for use of retrieval-based processes for solving addition problems: Individual and sex differences from first to sixth grades," was published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. David Geary is Curators' Professor and a Thomas Jefferson Fellow in the Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science. Drew Bailey will be starting as a post-doctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University this fall.

Unemployment could stay high as US economy slows

(AP) ? High unemployment isn't going away ? not as long as the economy grows as slowly as it did in the April-June quarter.

Weak consumer spending held growth to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent, even less than the 2 percent rate in the first quarter. And few expect the economy to accelerate in the second half of the year as Europe's financial woes and a U.S. budget crisis restrain businesses and consumers.

The growth estimate Friday from the Commerce Department suggested that the U.S. economy could be at risk of stalling three years after the recession ended. Economists generally say even 2 percent annual growth would add only about 90,000 jobs a month. That's too few to drive down the unemployment rate, which is stuck at 8.2 percent.

"The main takeaway from today's report, the specifics aside, is that the U.S. economy is barely growing," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC. "It's no wonder the unemployment rate cannot move lower."

Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, expects the unemployment rate to end this year ? and next year ? at 8.3 percent. He said he foresees no decline in unemployment because of how tepid he thinks economic growth will remain: 2.2 percent for all of 2012 and 2 percent for 2013.

Some economic data improved over the course of the April-June quarter, while others worsened. Hiring, for example, rose slightly from April to May to June. But home sales weakened.

Stocks rose as investors shrugged off the sluggish U.S growth and focused instead on pledges from European leaders to preserve the union of the 17 countries that use the euro. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped more than 200 points in late-afternoon trading. Broader indexes also gained.

The lackluster economy is raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

No president since Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the depths of the Great Depression, has been re-elected when the unemployment rate exceeded 8 percent. Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were ousted when unemployment was well below 8 percent.

Polls show that management of the economy is the only issue on which those surveyed express more confidence in Romney, with his business background, than Obama.

Glenn Hubbard, economic adviser for Romney, said Friday's report largely matched economists' expectations.

"But those expectations themselves and the report itself were actually quite disappointing," Hubbard said. "At that pattern, the economy simply will never return to full employment."

Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, noted that the report showed the economy grew for the 12th straight quarter. Still, Congress could strengthen growth and job creation by adopting Obama's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for all except the wealthiest Americans, Krueger said.

Republicans want the tax cuts extended for all Americans.

The 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter was the weakest since the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, grew at a 1.3 percent rate in the July-September quarter last year. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of a cup of coffee to the sale of fighter jets.

The government makes three estimates of the GDP for each quarter. Each revision is based on more complete economic data.

The sluggish growth rate could make the Federal Reserve more likely to announce some new step after it meets next week. But Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, doubts the Fed will act at the July 31-Aug. 1 meeting.

Many economists instead think the Fed will launch another round of bond buying at its September policy meeting. The aim would be to drive long-term interest rates lower and encourage more borrowing and spending.

In the second quarter, GDP in current dollars rose at an annual rate of $117.6 billion to $15.6 trillion.

Growth was weaker mostly because consumer spending slowed to a growth rate of just 1.5 percent. That was down from 2.4 percent in the first quarter.

Americans bought fewer autos, computers and other long-lasting manufactured goods. But money spent on services, which represents about two-thirds of spending, rose in the April-June quarter.

As they spent less, Americans also saved more. The savings rate reached 4 percent, up from 3.6 percent in the first quarter.

The savings rate reached a low of 1.5 percent in 2005, a year when soaring home prices made consumers feel less need to save. The rate climbed to 5.4 percent in 2008 as the financial crisis and recession squeezed Americans.

Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight, said consumer spending will likely remain subdued in the second half of the year. He thinks it will grow at or below a 2 percent annual rate.

Gas prices have stopped falling and have even started to rise in recent weeks. And this summer's severe drought is expected to push food prices up toward the end of the year.

"There is really no reason to see us pulling out of this malaise any time soon," Gault said. "I am not calling for a recession, but I am calling for weak growth."

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

The Commerce Department also revised its growth estimates for the past three years. Those revisions showed that the economy contracted 3.1 percent in 2009, slightly less than the 3.5 percent previously reported. Growth in 2010 was put at 2.4 percent, down from 3 percent, with growth in 2011 at 1.8 percent instead of 1.7 percent.
