U.S. Autism Rate Rises to 1 in 88 Children, CDC Reports

Boys have even higher risk; experts say part of increase may be due to better diagnosis.

THURSDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) ? The rate of autism spectrum disorders continues to rise among American children, with one in 88 now receiving such a diagnosis, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

That?s an increase from the one in 110 estimate released by the CDC just two years ago. The newer data, from 2008, also shows that autism is almost five times more common in boys than girls, with one in 54 boys diagnosed with the condition.

Why the steady uptick in cases? That?s not entirely clear, experts said.

?We know that people want answers to what?s causing this increase, and so do we,? Coleen Boyle, director of CDC?s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, said during a noon press briefing on Thursday.

?Some of the increase is due to the way children are identified, diagnosed and served,? she said. ?Although exactly how much is attributable to these factors is not known.?

Mark Roithmayr, president of the national advocacy group Autism Speaks, theorized that about half of the increase is accounted for by better diagnosis. But he agreed that the reasons for the rest of the increase remain unknown.

According to CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, ?Autism is a complex condition, and there remain many unanswered questions.? Speaking at the press conference, he said that ?we are learning more every day, but still have a great deal to learn.?

What is known, according to Roithmayr, is that, ?very clearly now, there is an autism epidemic in the United States.? And the increase in incidence ? about a 23 percent jump every two years ? has been ongoing, he said.

The report was published Thursday in the CDC?s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

According to the new CDC numbers, the rate of children being diagnosed with autism varies widely by state: From one in 210 in Alabama to one in 47 in Utah. The biggest increase in diagnoses was seen among Hispanics and blacks, according to the report.

The data show that about 11 in every 1,000 8-year-old children have now been diagnosed with autism, a 23 percent increase since the last report in 2009.

One hopeful sign: there are more early diagnoses, which can aid in treatment, experts noted. The CDC said that more children are now being diagnosed by the age of 3. Among children born in 1994, just 12 percent of cases were being diagnosed by that age, but for children born in 2000 that number increased to 18 percent.

Of course, the severity of an autism spectrum disorder can vary depending on the child. About 9 percent of those with autism are what is called ?high-functioning,? about
44 percent have the most serious form of the condition and 47 percent have various milder forms of autism, Roithmayr noted.

He added that there is a panel, set up by the American Psychiatric Association, that is currently looking at changing the definition of autism. Such a change could affect these numbers and will be included in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the ?bible? of psychological disorders used by psychiatrists worldwide.

Shrinking the definition of autism is bound to meet with controversy, however. ?It is imperative that DSM5 not exclude anyone on the spectrum,? Roithmayr said. ?If it does, we are going on a big offensive.?

Autism has other costs, too. According to Autism Speaks, the financial burden related to autism has tripled over the past six years. Based on these new numbers, the group estimated that the annual price tag for autism in the United States will reach $137 billion, he said. ?This is a national emergency,? Roithmayr said, and he believes insurance companies must do more to help parents shoulder the cost of caring for a child affected by autism.

All of this points to the need for more funding for research on the genetic and environmental causes of autism, he added.

?It?s concerning that there continues to be a steady increase in autism spectrum disorders,? said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental behavioral pediatrics at the Steven Alexandra Children?s Medical Center of New York, in New Hyde Park.

Although there are some children with autism who can show significant gains there are many who don?t, which highlights the long-term impact of the problem on both individuals and society, Adesman added.

?This is a significant problem from a public health standpoint,? he said. ?There is a need for parents and clinicians to identify children with autism spectrum disorder as early as possible in the hopes that it would maximize children?s developmental outcome.?

Banjo innovator and bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died on Wednesday at a Nashville hospital at age 88.

He had been in failing health for some time, according to his son, Gary Scruggs, who played bass guitar with his father. Talking about his father's death, he said with a cracking voice: "He?s 88 and it's a slow process."

A four-time Grammy winner, Scruggs was perhaps best known in popular culture for "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," the theme song for "The Beverly Hillbillies" television program, and for "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," a Flatt & Scruggs classic which was used in the 1967 classic film, "Bonnie and Clyde."

While he dabbled in all forms of music, and was at home in the company of all creative musicians, he was among the first to popularize what his former boss, Bill Monroe, referred to as bluegrass music.

After breaking with Monroe, Scruggs and his guitar-playing friend, Lester Flatt, formed Flatt & Scruggs with the Foggy Mountain Boys.

Scruggs' style of banjo playing set him apart. Rather than flailing at the banjo strings, as most of his contemporaries did, he delicately hit the strings with three right fingers, coaxing the instrument to produce precise melodies.

His style influenced the likes of The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and others who took?up the banjo because of the playing of Scruggs, a native of Shelby, North Carolina.

The "Scruggs picking style" was saluted in a statement released after his death by Recording Academy President and Chief Executive Neil Portnow, who said that he "helped popularize the banjo and helped change country music."

Those who played with the banjo wizard mourned his loss.

"I will miss my friend," Mac Wiseman, an original flattop guitarist with the Foggy Mountain Boys, said from his Nashville home. Wiseman, 86, said his own maladies will keep him from Sunday's funeral at the Ryman Auditorium, the former home of the Grand Ole Opry in downtown Nashville.

"I'm not getting around too well," said Wiseman. "I'll remember him as he was when we were together."

Marty Stuart, who broke into bluegrass music as a child prodigy with Flatt, was performing on Wednesday and could not be reached for comment. But his wife, classic country singer Connie Smith, said Scruggs will be missed.

"It leaves a hole in your heart," she said. "He's just a part of our life." She said her husband would perform at the funeral.

Dixie Hall, a longtime friend of the Scruggs family and wife of Tom T. Hall, the great storyteller and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, said Scruggs "was a dear friend and Louise was too."

Louise Scruggs, who helped guide her husband's career, died in 2006. "It's good to know they are together," said Dixie Hall.

Tom T. Hall teamed with Scruggs on what many?consider among the best bluegrass albums, "The Storyteller and the Banjoman" in 1982.

"You know there's a lot of people out there, a lot of others. There's one Earl," Hall said.

Scruggs is survived also by a second son, Randy.

Childhood Obesity: A Double Standard for Public Schools and ...

My children, are far from obese. ?I would even venture to say, that my oldest two aren?t even overweight. ?According to Fort Bend ISD in Texas, I am wrong.

Kylie, our 13 year old daughter, asked me last night, if she was overweight. ?I looked at her really funny and told her ?no way!? ?But then, I wanted to know why she felt that way. ?Kylie is very self conscious. ?As a victim of past bullying (unrelated to weight), Kylie has put a lot of time and effort into her appearance and health. ?She has seen how mean kids can be, and she stays active, places concern with portion control, and keeps up with herself so that she doesn?t fall victim again.

Apparently, her gym coaches were doing the Body Mass Index screening, and they told her she was overweight. ?This bothered her so badly, that she pulled me aside, whle in the comfort of her own home, away from her brothers and dad, to ask me if she was overweight.

Isn?t that sad?

Meet Braxton. ?He?s our 7, almost 8 year old kiddo. ?His stature is the smallest of our four kids. ?His school says he?s almost obese.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your student, (HIS FULL NAME), was measured for height and weight on 9/29/11 as part of the campus regular health screening. ?The height and weight measurements is used to determine a body mass index or BMI. ?BMI is used by doctors and nurses to help identify underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese children. ?The percents used are below:

• Underweight BMI less than 5%
• Within Normal Range BMI 5% to 84%
• Overweight BMI 85% to 94%
• Obese BMI greater than or equal to 95%

Your child?s results showed:

• Height: 50.25
• Weight: ?67.60
• BMI-for-age: 93.06%

The letter then goes on to say that there are, in fact, other factors like sports activities and family history, that can increase the BMI for kids, so take them to a health care provider to find out if they are in a healthy range or not, but that?s not my concern.

I?m bothered by this screening, not because I don?t think that childhood?obesity?is a noteworthy cause, but because I don?t believe that a BMI (which as stated is an extremely unreliable measurement of ?a person?s healthy weight status) should define a child, or label them at such an early age.

We try to provide healthy, well balanced meals here at home (although Braxton is our pickiest eater!). ?We send our kids to school with a sack lunch every day because the food served in the cafeterias include pink slime, ice cream bars,?Gatorade, cookies, high sodium, pre-packacked foods, and more. ?Not to mention what is being eaten in the classrooms as ?rewards? for doing the right thing (what happened to just DOING the right thing because it?s the right thing?). ?Braxton has come home several times with mini-candy bars or gum for various reasons.

I also got a letter in his backpack, yesterday, that I owe the cafeteria money. ?Apparently, Braxton forgot his lunch one day and had to eat at school. ?The invoice is for $4.00. ?How, in the world, can a child, who does not have a lunch account set up at school, rack up a $4 lunch in on sitting? ?I?ll tell you how. ?Everything he purchased that day were a la carte items which included ice cream and chocolate milk. ?What happened to a PB&J and calling it even?

As far as physical activity goes, let?s not forget what the standard punishment is, for a parent not signing the daily planner, not?completing?homework, or not reading for their allotted minutes the night before. ?In our elementary, it?s?sitting out for a certain amount of time at recess. ?Think about that. ?Not only are kids getting LESS THAN 30 minutes a day, in some cases, for structured physical activity, but their free play is often taken away as punishment for some things that are out of their control.

Texas mandates at least 135 minutes of moderate or vigorous structured physical activity per week in elementary school (grades K-5, or K-6, depending on the district), but it does not required daily recess. Full day kindergarten students, and to the extent practicable, PK students in half day programs, are to participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity for 30 minutes each day. The state also mandates at least 30 minutes per day of structured moderate-to-vigorous structured physical activity in junior high (grades 6-8 or 7-8, depending on the district).

Video shows Zimmerman shortly after Martin shooting

Does surveillance video of George Zimmerman in police custody on the night of Trayvon Martin's death contradict claims that he was beaten and bloodied during an altercation with the Florida teen? NBC's Ron Allen reports.

Updated at 7:09 a.m. ET: Surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman being led from a police car shortly after he fatally shot teenager Trayvon Martin does not appear to show any injuries or bloodstains, but his attorney says the video is too grainy to be revealing.

The footage, obtained by ABC News?on Wednesday, shows a handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car unaided and walking into the police station where he was taken after the shooting in Sanford, Fla.

It was taken about four hours after the deadly incident.?

There are no visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes. However,?he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure blood stains.

Appearing on NBC's TODAY on Thursday, Zimmerman's attorney Craig Sonner described the video as "very grainy." He also pointed out that Zimmerman had been "cleaned-up" and received first aid in the four hours between the incident and Zimmerman's videotaped arrival at the police station.

Sonner has previously said that his client suffered a broken nose and a gash to his head during the altercation.

George Zimmerman's attorney, Craig Sonner, tells TODAY's Matt Lauer that a video of George Zimmerman taken after the killing of Trayvon Martin is too grainy to show whether he had any blood or bruises on his face.

Neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman, 28, who was released without charge,?claims he shot dead?the 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 in self-defense after the teen attacked him.

Eugene O'Donnell, of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said the video shows "that it's beyond dispute that there are no serious injuries, physical injuries, he's not in a hospital."

"There's no bruising that's observable," O'Donnell told MSNBC TV's?The Last Word.?However, he added that "it's possible that there are injuries that are not seen in the video."

Richard Kurtz, the funeral director who?prepared Martin's body, was asked if there were any signs on his hands that he had punched someone.

"The only thing that I was able to see was the gunshot wound," Kurtz told The Last Word. "I could not see evidence like he had been punching somebody as the news media say he was punching ... It just did not add up to me."

See-through 3D computer with gesture controls gives - BGR

Some believe a future full of massive, gesture-controlled computer displays like the ones seen in Twentieth Century Fox?s Minority Report are an inevitability, and a prototype PC designed by an intern with the?Microsoft Applied Sciences Group may be among the first steps in making that future a reality. Massachusetts Institute of Technology Ph.D student and MIT Media Lab?research assistant?Jinha Lee recently set out to change the way we interact with desktop computers. While progress has been made with 3D display technology, 3D has not yet proliferated in the personal computing space and Lee wants to change that.?The end result of his work is a fascinating desktop computer with a transparent 3D display and a unique gesture-based interface that could change the way we use computers.

?Computer scientist Ivan Sutherland once called a computer display ?a looking glass into a mathematical wonderland,? and I have always aspired to walk in this wonderland to interact with those abstract beings,? Lee wrote on his blog. Lee?s creation, built in cooperation with researchers and engineers at the?Microsoft Applied Sciences Group, does just that.

Lee?s PC uses a transparent display with 3D technology and gesture recognition. Gestures are performed behind the angled display rather than in front of it as with most gesture-based control systems, and a front-facing camera system tracks the user?s head so the 3D perspective shown on the computer?s display adjusts appropriately when the user shifts his or her position. The machine?s operator can also control the computer with a standard keyboard and trackpad positioned behind the display.

The user interface on Lee?s PC shows stacks of windows in a 3D environment. The computer tracks the user?s hands on all three axes, allowing the operator to grab items shown on the screen and interact with them in all three dimensions by moving virtual objects along the x, y, or z axis. This innovative combination of solutions opens a wide range of possibilities for PC software and is far more advanced and versatile than touchscreen technology, which only provides two dimensions that the user is able to interact with.

?Users can casually open up the See-Through 3D Desktop and Type on the keyboard or use a trackpad as in traditional 2D operating environment,? Lee explains. ?Windows or files are perceived to be placed in a 3D space between a screen and the input plane. The user can lift up his hands to reach the displayed windows and arrange them in this 3D space.?

Lee has not addressed the possibility of a production version of his see-through 3D desktop PC.

Brian Austin Green & Megan Fox Accused Of Assaulting Photographer

Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox are being accused of assaulting a photographer in what is being called a beach brawl. The actor could find himself in some serious trouble if these allegations are true. ? Photographer Delbert Shaw is claiming that while he was taking pictures of a bikini clad Fox on the beach both Megan and Brian began objecting with verbal threats. The event allegedly occurred while the couple was vacationing in Hawaii last December. According to the New York Daily News a lawyer for Shaw has said that the altercation turned violent when Fox asked her hubby if he was going to let the photog get way with taking pics of her. After that the former 90210 star allegedly tackled Delbert and threw his iPhone into the ocean outside the Four Seasons. Shaw is claiming that he sustained injuries when Brain threw him to the ground and tossed him around including some bruising and a black eye. The lawsuit was officially filed today and Delbert is asking for an unspecified amount of damages. Apparently TMZ has photos of Green lunging at Shaw, which could help his case. Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability's special issue dedicated to new policy briefs on sustainability discussed at Planet under Pressure Conference

Amsterdam -- Elsevier today published a special issue of its journal Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. The issue publishes papers on the topics of several policy briefs that are on the agenda of the annual United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development: energy, food and water security, green economy, health and well-being. The publication of the special issue ties in with the Planet under Pressure Conference, starting today in London, where each of the policy briefs are presented and discussed.

A key feature of these policy briefs is the need for an interconnected approach to addressing global environmental and sustainability challenges. Papers published in the special issue of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability provide a rigorous scientific basis for the policy briefs and are well-supported by references to the multidisciplinary scientific literature. The issue additionally includes a series of papers describing major developments and findings of various international global change programs, thus providing key knowledge and backing for topics discussed at the Planet under Pressure Conference.

At the Planet under Pressure Conference significant findings from various research programs will be presented to scientists, world leaders, policy makers, journalists and the general public, who are all also expected to participate in the key UN-event RIO+20, to be held from 20-22 June in Rio de Janeiro.

"Many of the research papers published in our special issue have provided key contributions to the research programs discussed at the Planet under Pressure Conference," said Professor Rik Leemans, Editor of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. "All papers take a very interdisciplinary and forward thinking approach. They give a glimpse of future research results that are relevant for achieving global sustainability."
