Here are some of the most popular fish species for beginners:

Angelfish ? these elegant fish can grow as big as 6 inches. They have distinct flowing fins and triangular shaped bodies. They come in a variety of colors such as silver with black stripes, marbled, and black with pink fins. Most of the angelfish taken from the wild can easily adapt to captive life. They have strict feeding habits depending on the type of species.

Platys ? these small fish can grow as big as 2.5 inches. These are hardy and easy to care for. They prefer slightly alkaline water and don?t need such a large tank. Their diet is composed of a variety of food such as live feed and fish pellets. A nutritionally balanced diet will enhance their colors and overall health. Platys have a tendency to eat their own young but are easy to breed. Normally, the females are larger than the males.

Tropical catfish ? these are a diverse group of fish that have become largely popular with many fish hobbyists. Sizes range from the tiny otocinclus to the bigger red-tailed catfish. With such a big variety, you are bound to find a type of catfish that is best suited for your tank. One of the most popular catfish for beginners is the otocinclus, also known as dwarf suckers, because they keep the aquarium glass and plants from accumulating algae. They are tan with black spots. They are attractive yet a functional addition to your collection.

Barbs ? these are best kept in schools of three or four in the tank. They are a shy type of fish and are popular because they are easy to maintain. They are active fish that like to dart about in the tank.? Take note that they have a tendency to nip on the fins of other fish that swim slower than them.

Tetra ? these come in electrifyingly vibrant colors. They like to swim in schools of four to eight of the same kind of species. They are harmonious and can get along with other types of fish.
