"This is just another amenity, another recreation amenity, that the community can enjoy. So mountain biking is something that's been a little bit under-represented in Frederick County. And now having those here at Sherando Park means that people can experience that activity."

Park and Stewardship Planner Jon Turkel is talking about the new mountain bike trail located on the north side of Sherando Park, just past the softball fields. Right now 1 mile of the trail is completed, and the next half mile segment is being worked on. Park Manager Cory Smith says community members were a huge help in making the trail.

He explains, "it's been entirely completed by volunteers. Boy Scouts, the local cycling group - the Winchester Wheelmen, as well as just some other local trail builders and enthusiasts. It's been quite a lot of help for us."

The trail weaves through the woods and even beside a stream. You can look for markers along the trail. They'll tell you which path is easier and which one is more difficult. The goal is to make the mountain bike trail 3 miles long, and you can help.

"We actually have work sessions for the rest of this month on Thursday evenings at 5 p.m. til dusk. And the folks just sign a waiver form, and they can help us build the trail," adds Smith.

For more information about the trail or volunteering, you can call 540-868-0970.

Smith concludes, "trails in general. There's quite a need for more trails, especially in Frederick County. And the more we build, the more interest we have. And so the interest is really there and we're excited about that."
